Overview:

We are seeking a Maintenance Engineer who will focus on supporting all phases of target maintenance at the Spallation Neutron Source. The Target Systems Maintenance Engineer is responsible for supporting the maintenance Target Systems equipment and facilities to ensure safe, reliable, predictable, and efficient operations. This scope includes administration and facilitation of the Target systems maintenance program and processes; implementation of corrective, predictive, preventative maintenance and modification work activities; work scheduling; and outage management.

This position resides in the Target Maintenance Group in the Target Development, Engineering & Operations Section, Neutron Technologies Division, Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Own and direct all phases of target maintenance by establishing detailed work plans that define scope, set expectations, and drive hazard identification, evaluation, and mitigation.

  • Works with target System Engineers (SEs) and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to develop detailed work planning documentation.

  • Supports Section and Division planning through evaluating and forecasting maintenance activities to integrate target maintenance into Directorate planning during maintenance outages and neutron production run cycles.

  • Provides long-term evaluation and planning for critical maintenance and obsolescence issues.

  • Serves as the SME for target maintenance activities.

  • Serve as the engineering-maintenance integration lead, acting as the primary point of accountability to align reliability priorities, resolve gaps, and remove execution barriers for the Target Reliability Engineer.

  • Lead operational communication and coordination by ensuring Operations SMEs receive timely planned-maintenance notifications, impacts, and formal return-to-service updates upon completion

  • Enforce and continuously improve work control compliance by setting standards, verifying adherence to required processes, and ensuring hazards are effectively controlled before and during execution.

  • Drive hazard evaluation rigor with SEs/SMEs, ensuring work plans fully capture required scope, controls, prerequisites, and acceptance/return-to-service criteria.

  • Take ownership of work readiness by guiding and supporting planners, schedulers, and area managers to ensure work is properly graded, fully planned, resourced, and execution-ready prior to release.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A BS degree in engineering or a related technical field.

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in complex facility or nuclear facility maintenance planning and execution.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with maintenance activities in a nuclear facility operating environment.

  • Experience working with cryogenic systems.

  • Familiarity with vacuum systems.

  • Experience with predictive maintenance techniques and equipment reliability programs.
