Job Summary
The Team:The Site Remediation Program is responsible for regulating the identification, investigation, and remediation of contaminated sites across British Columbia. The team works closely with environmental professionals, industry, Indigenous communities, local governments, and the public to ensure contaminated lands are managed in a manner that protects both people and the environment. This work contributes directly to sustainable development and long-term environmental outcomes across the province.
The Role:The Senior Contaminated Sites Officer brings advanced hydrogeological expertise to the assessment and remediation of contaminated sites across British Columbia. Responsible for leading complex technical reviews, providing authoritative regulatory advice, and serving as a statutory decision maker under the Environmental Management Act, the role influences outcomes that protect human health and the environment. Beyond individual files, this position helps shape provincial legislation, policy, guidance, and best practices within the Site Remediation Program.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements:- Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering, Geosciences, or Hydrogeology AND a minimum of seven (7) years of directly related experience; OR
- Master's Degree or higher in Engineering, Geosciences, or Hydrogeology AND a minimum of five (5) years of directly related experience.
Directly related experience, generally obtained post-registration, ideally in both private and public practice, as a Professional Engineer or Professional Geoscientist in the area of contaminated site investigation, remediation and management
AND must include:
- Experience in contaminated sites.
- Experience in the review and/or audit of other professionals' written technical work.
- Experience with the Environmental Management Act, Contaminated Sites Regulation and/or other related environmental statutes and regulations.
Professional Registration and Certification Requirements:- Registered, or immediately eligible for registration, as a Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo.) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC). Note: "Immediately eligible for registration" means meeting all requirements for full professional registration and completing the process of obtaining full registration with the relevant BC professional association within six (6) months of employment.
Preference may be given to applicants with one (1) or more of the following:- At least ten (10) years of directly related experience obtained post-registration as a Professional Engineer or Professional Geoscientist.
- Experience working effectively, respectfully and knowledgeably with different levels of government and Indigenous communities.
- Experience in contaminated sites in British Columbia.
- Experience in contaminant hydrogeology including inorganic geochemistry and acid rock drainage.
- Experience in the mining industry and mining practices.
About this Position:There is currently one (1) permanent, full time position available.
