Job Summary
The Role:Where geoscience meets data science, the Mineral Potential Geoscientist uses advanced analytics, predictive techniques, and geological expertise to assess British Columbia's mineral potential and support informed land-use and resource decisions. The work influences exploration strategies, government planning, and investment decisions while contributing to the development of innovative geoscience tools, databases, and resource assessments used across the province. Through data innovation and expert geoscience advice, this role helps reveal where British Columbia's next mineral discoveries may be found.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements:- A Master of Science Degree in Geoscience and three (3) years of relevant industry, academic or government science experience, or a Bachelor of Science Degree with at least five (5) years of industry, academic, or government science experience.
- Minimum two (2) years' experience in numeric analyses, statistic, modelling and other advanced computation.
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience with mineral potential assessment methods and data requirements.
- Experience using GIS tools such as ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, or FME, spatial database systems such as PostgreSQL/PostGIS, SQL Server spatial, or Oracle spatial.
Professional Registration and Certification Requirements:
- Registered, or immediately eligible for registration, as a Registered Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo.) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC). Note: "Immediately eligible for registration" means meeting all requirements for full professional registration and completing the process of obtaining full registration with the relevant BC professional association within six (6) months of employment.
Preference may be given to those with experience in one (1) or more of the following:
- Geology, geochemistry, mineral resources, mineral deposits, Quaternary geology and/or other related areas of expertise.
- Geology, mineral deposits and mineral exploration in the Canadian Cordillera.
- Geospatial and spatial analysis: GDAL/OGR, rasterio, GeoPandas, shapely, pyproj.
- Statistical and scientific computing: R, SciPy, NumPy, pandas, MATLAB.
- Machine learning and data mining: scikit learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch, XGBoost, LightGBM.
- Spatial statistics and geostatistics: PySAL, gstat, SciKit-GStat.
- Visualization and exploratory data analysis: matplotlib, seaborn, ggplot2.
- Mineral potential assessment approaches, methods, procedures, practices and implementations.
- Experience in presenting geoscientific results to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Applying sound scientific judgement; managing independent and innovative research and interpret diverse geoscience data.
- Publishing geoscience data and results in peer-reviewed journals and government literature.
- International and open standards and specifications for geoscience and geospatial, e.g., ISO, Open Geospatial Consortium, International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) / Commission for the Application and Management of Geoscience Information (CGI), and International Commission for Stratigraphy.
- Experience supervising contractors and managing projects.
About this Position:There is currently one (1) permanent, full time position available in Victoria.

Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work from home a few days per week subject to an approved Telework Agreement.
Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.
