Position Summary

Mesabi Metallics is seeking a highly experienced Logistics Manager to lead the strategic planning, design, permitting, development, and operational execution of the Company's rail and barge transportation network supporting one of the largest integrated mining and steel manufacturing projects in North America. This senior leadership role will oversee the transportation strategy for inbound raw materials and outbound finished products while ensuring logistics infrastructure is developed safely, efficiently, and in alignment with long-term operational objectives.

The Logistics Manager will play a critical role throughout the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) lifecycle, partnering closely with engineering, procurement, construction, environmental, operations, and executive leadership teams. This position will be responsible for establishing scalable transportation systems that support mining, pelletizing, Direct Reduced Iron (DRI), and integrated steelmaking operations while maintaining compliance with all regulatory and environmental requirements.Job Responsibilities
  • Lead the planning, design, permitting, development, and implementation of rail and barge transportation infrastructure supporting mining, pelletizing, DRI, and steelmaking operations.
  • Develop and execute long-term logistics strategies that optimize transportation efficiency, reliability, and cost while supporting future operational growth.
  • Provide logistics leadership throughout the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) lifecycle, ensuring transportation systems are designed and constructed to meet operational requirements.
  • Coordinate federal, state, and local permitting activities associated with rail infrastructure, barge facilities, terminals, and related transportation assets.
  • Collaborate with engineering consultants, EPC contractors, regulatory agencies, and internal stakeholders throughout project development and execution.
  • Establish operating plans for inbound raw materials and outbound finished products utilizing rail, barge, and multimodal transportation networks.
  • Develop and maintain strategic relationships with rail carriers, port authorities, terminal operators, barge companies, and third-party logistics providers.
  • Monitor logistics performance, transportation capacity, project schedules, budgets, and key performance indicators to ensure successful execution.
  • Identify transportation risks and develop mitigation strategies to ensure continuity of operations and supply chain reliability.
  • Support commissioning and startup activities while transitioning logistics systems from construction into commercial operation.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable transportation, environmental, maritime, railroad, and safety regulations.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives focused on operational efficiency, transportation optimization, and cost reduction.
  • Mentor and provide leadership to logistics personnel while fostering a culture of safety, accountability, and operational excellence.
Skills and Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Transportation Management, Business Administration, or a related field required.
  • Master's degree (MBA or related discipline) preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience managing logistics, transportation, supply chain, or capital projects within mining, steel, heavy industrial manufacturing, energy, or large-scale infrastructure environments.
  • Demonstrated experience with the design, permitting, construction support, startup, and operation of rail and barge transportation systems.
  • Strong understanding of railroad operations, marine transportation, inland waterways, port facilities, multimodal logistics, and industrial transportation infrastructure.
  • Experience supporting large capital projects through the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) process.
  • Thorough knowledge of transportation permitting, environmental regulations, and regulatory compliance.
  • Proven experience managing relationships with railroads, marine carriers, ports, terminals, engineering firms, contractors, and government agencies.
  • Strong financial, analytical, and strategic planning capabilities.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, leadership, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams in complex industrial environments.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to travel as needed to project sites, rail facilities, ports, and vendor locations.
  • Ability to work in industrial, mining, construction, and outdoor environments while adhering to all applicable safety requirements.
