Full Job Description
What will you be doing!
  • Providing proactive, practical in-house legal advice and strategic direction within a broad scope of human resources, labour and employment areas:
    • Advising on Canada Labour Code issues, including occupational health and safety, hours of work, etc.
    • Advising on the terms of numerous collective bargaining agreements.
    • Advising on matters relating to employee discipline and termination of employment.
    • Advising on human rights, immigration, employment-related privacy and workers' compensation matters.
  • Making decisions and providing legal advice in dispute resolution efforts and litigation.
    • Assisting with grievances and internal dispute mechanism procedures.
    • Preparing for and assist with conducting employment related arbitration or litigation.
    • Engaging in negotiations with external counsel and CNL union representatives using sound judgment to make reasoned recommendations.
  • Providing practical legal advice while appropriately balancing risk and opportunity:
    • Creating and delivering training presentations for staff of all levels within a large and complex organization on a variety of labour and employment areas.
    • Participating in the creation of processes, procedures and practices to proactively mitigate risk in the human resources, labour and employment areas.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:
  • Education
    • Practicing Lawyer, Member in good standing with the Law Society within Canada.
  • Experience
    • At a minimum, 5-6 years of post-call experience.
    • Experience in a federally regulated employment environment under the Canada Labour Code is preferred.
    • Experience with a corporate legal department or a nationally recognized law firm is required.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Effective communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills to contribute to discussions, presentations and negotiations within a large and complex organization.
    • Effective analytical and advocacy skills and a proven ability to make decisions and provide legal advice in dispute resolution efforts and litigation.
    • Demonstrated experience and sound judgment to make reasoned recommendations.
    • Ability to manage requests from multiple clients in a fast-paced environment while paying attention to detail.
    • Sound knowledge and solid understanding of employment and labour-related fundamentals.
    • Experience in a federally regulated employment environment under the Canada Labour Code is preferred.
    • Experience in all employment and labour-related legal matters under the Canada Labour Code is preferred.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
    • Level 2 Secret requires a minimum of 7 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's "Standard on Security Screening" and the "Policy on Government Security."

Working Conditions:
  • Work remotely (from home) with periodic visits to Chalk River, Whiteshell, Port Hope, and other CNL sites, or other areas, as meetings at Chalk River may be required.
  • Working schedule: Five (5) days per week, seven and a half (7.5) hours per day for a thirty-seven and a half (37.5) hour work week.
