Full Job Description
McAlvain Construction, a Big-D Company, has an opportunity for an experienced Learning & Development Manager to join our team of construction professionals based in the Boise, ID area.

Interpersonal Requirements

  • Strong ability to build trust and rapport with employees, supervisors, and leadership across every department
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to translate technical and safety content into clear, engaging training materials
  • Collaborative, consultative approach when partnering with subject matter experts, department leaders, and HR to design training
  • Coaching mindset with a genuine interest in employee growth and career development
  • Comfortable influencing without direct authority to gain buy-in for training initiatives across departments
  • Organized and capable of managing multiple concurrent training projects and priorities
  • Proactive and driven to continuously improve training programs, career paths, and processes
  • Detail-oriented with a focus on accurate recordkeeping and program tracking
  • Strong leadership and people-management skills to develop and support a small team
  • Patient and adaptable when working with employees at varying skill and experience levels, including field and trade staff

Technical Requirements

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Experience administering a Learning Management System (LMS) to build courses, assign trainings, and track completions
  • Familiarity with instructional design tools and adult learning principles
  • Experience with HRIS or talent management systems used to track career paths and development plans
  • Comfortable building and maintaining reporting/dashboards on training completion, compliance, and program metrics
  • Working knowledge of OSHA and construction-industry safety training requirements, or the ability to quickly learn them


Tasks

  • Partner with department leaders and subject matter experts (SMEs) across the company to identify training needs and design relevant courses and programs
  • Develop, update, and maintain a company-wide training curriculum covering technical, safety, leadership, and professional development topics
  • Design and implement career path frameworks for field and office roles, in partnership with HR and department leadership
  • Partner closely with HR on talent development initiatives, including succession planning, performance-linked development plans, and high-potential employee programs
  • Directly supervise and develop the Instructional Designer and Safety Trainer, providing coaching, workload direction, and performance management
  • Oversee the Instructional Designer's work building courses, e-learning modules, and training materials
  • Oversee the Safety Trainer's work delivering and maintaining safety training programs and certifications
  • Ensure the team maintains accurate, up-to-date training records, including completions, certifications, and renewal dates
  • Track and report on employee progress along established career paths and development plans
  • Manage the implementation, scheduling, and logistics of training programs company-wide
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of training programs and career path initiatives, using data to recommend improvements
  • Manage the Learning Management System (LMS), including course assignments, completion tracking, and reporting
  • Develop and manage the L&D budget in partnership with HR
  • Stay current on adult learning best practices and construction-industry training and regulatory requirements
  • Communicate training expectations, schedules, and resources to employees and leadership across the company


Experience and Education

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Organizational Development, Education, or a related field required; equivalent combination of experience and education considered •
  • Experience: 3-5 years of experience in learning and development, training management, or organizational development, including experience leading or managing a team; construction, industrial, or manufacturing industry experience preferred
  • Software: Learning Management System (LMS) administration; Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel)
  • Additional: Instructional design or adult learning theory background preferred; SHRM-CP, ATD-CI, or similar credential a plus; based primarily at company headquarters
