Job Description:The Lead Software Engineer / Chapter Lead for Drupal and Web Platforms provides technical leadership, engineering oversight, and people management for the Web Development Engineering Chapter within Enterprise Technology. This role leads a team of web developers responsible for supporting, maintaining, and advancing ASU's enterprise Drupal-based content management system distribution, Webspark, along with related web platforms, integrations, and managed hosting services.
This position balances hands-on software engineering, platform operations, DevOps practices, and service ownership with team leadership and mentorship. The role is critical to sustaining the reliability, security, accessibility, and scalability of ASU's web ecosystem while enabling continued modernization across TechEd services. The Lead Software Engineer / Chapter Lead also helps guide the responsible use of AI-assisted engineering practices to improve development workflows, automate routine work, accelerate platform enhancements, and create better digital experiences for students, faculty, staff, and the broader ASU community.

Pay Rate: $94,300.00 - $103,370.00; DOE
Essential Duties:- Lead development, release, and maintenance of ASU web platforms: Oversee and perform regular releases for ASU's Drupal multisite codebases, including Webspark and related platform components. Ensure releases are tested, documented, and coordinated with appropriate stakeholders, site owners, and technical teams.
- Support platform stability, performance, and security: Serve as a technical owner and escalation point for complex issues involving Drupal, Acquia, Webspark, managed hosting, integrations, code quality, performance, accessibility, and production support. Partner with Enterprise Technology teams to ensure ASU's web platforms remain secure, reliable, and aligned with institutional standards.
- Guide Webspark and Drupal platform strategy:Contribute to the technical roadmap for ASU's Drupal and web platform ecosystem. Identify opportunities to improve architecture, reduce technical debt, strengthen governance, modernize development practices, and enhance the long-term sustainability of enterprise web services.
- Provide leadership to web developers and technical contributors:Supervise, mentor, and coach a team of developers across varying levels of experience. Establish individualized development goals, support onboarding, guide prioritization, review technical work, and cultivate engineering practices that promote quality, accountability, collaboration, and continuous learning.
- Advance AI-enabled engineering practices:Evaluate and apply AI tools where appropriate to improve developer productivity, automate repetitive tasks, support code generation and review, improve documentation, accelerate troubleshooting, and streamline platform operations. Promote responsible AI use that aligns with ASU and Enterprise Technology expectations for security, quality, accessibility, and human oversight.
- Support TechEd modernization and digital experience initiatives:Partner with teams across Enterprise Technology to support web modernization efforts, platform transitions, accessibility initiatives, AI-related web opportunities, and improvements that strengthen ASU's broader digital ecosystem.
- Develop and maintain custom solutions:Write, review, test, and deploy custom modules, themes, scripts, integrations, and automation to support enterprise web needs. This includes automation for large-scale transitions such as WordPress-to-Drupal migrations, site launches, site decommissions, and platform standardization efforts.
- Provide guidance and support to the ASU web community:Develop documentation, training materials, office hours, technical guidance, and support resources for website owners, editors, and developers using Webspark and related web services. Translate technical concepts into clear guidance for both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Strengthen DevOps and release management practices: Support continuous improvement of development workflows, deployment pipelines, version control, configuration management, QA practices, release planning, and operational documentation. Ensure platform changes are delivered with appropriate testing, communication, and rollback planning.
- Collaborate across Enterprise Technology:Work closely with service owners, product teams, project managers, cybersecurity, accessibility, infrastructure, analytics, and other Enterprise Technology partners to resolve issues, identify opportunities, align priorities, and improve service delivery across the web ecosystem.
- Contribute to organizational culture and operational excellence:Foster a positive, collaborative, and service-oriented team culture. Support cross-functional partnerships, knowledge sharing, professional development, and continuous improvement efforts that align with Enterprise Technology's mission and values.
Desired Qualifications:- Demonstrated experience leading or mentoring software engineers, web developers, or technical teams in an enterprise environment.
- Deep engineering knowledge of Drupal 10+ architecture, including custom module development, theme development, configuration management, deployment workflows, maintenance practices, and Drupal multisite environments.
- Experience supporting enterprise content management systems and large-scale managed web platforms.
- Experience with Acquia, Pantheon, WP Engine, or comparable managed hosting platforms.
- Experience with PHP, modern JavaScript, React, HTML, CSS, and web application development practices.
- Knowledge of DevOps practices, CI/CD workflows, version control, automated testing, release management, and environment management.
- Familiarity with Cloudflare or comparable CDN, web performance, caching, DNS, and security-related web platform services.
- Demonstrated understanding of web accessibility standards, including WCAG 2.1 AA or higher, and experience applying accessibility best practices in web development.
- Experience using Jira, Confluence, or similar tools for work management, documentation, sprint planning, and technical collaboration.
- Familiarity with AI-assisted software engineering tools and practices, including code generation, documentation support, test creation, workflow automation, and responsible AI use in technical environments.
- Ability to evaluate emerging technologies, including AI-enabled development capabilities, and determine how they can responsibly improve enterprise web services.
- Experience supporting higher education, TechEd, digital experience platforms, or complex enterprise service environments.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, communication, and documentation skills.
- Ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear guidance for stakeholders, developers, website owners, and service partners.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across technical and non-technical teams to solve problems, improve services, and support organizational goals.
Working Environment: - Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse.
- Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
- Occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 25 pounds.
