Full Job Description

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Accountable to the unit Manager and/or the Director of the department.
  • Proficient in the essential job functions and responsibilities of a surgical technician.  
  • Provides input with staffing assignments to ensure that patient needs, and staff competencies are equitable.
  • Provides a dynamic specialty service by working with physicians on new procedures that could be introduced to the operating room.
  • Responsible for the completeness and availability of supplies, special instrumentation sets, and equipment needed to accomplish the surgical schedule. 
  • Consistently monitors to ensure supplies and instrumentation are available and follows through, as needed, by working in close relationship with Materials Management, vendors, and Sterile Processing Department.
  • Acts as a clinical resource for staff members providing assistance and support in the OR. 
  • Acts as a mentor and assists in the clinical orientation of staff to their specialty.
  • Assists staff in problem solving and dealing with physician complaints or needs as appropriate to their service.
  • Assists with overseeing tasks and functions to other licensed and unlicensed personnel as needed.
  • Coordinates and prioritizes clinical and operational activities to promote a smooth workflow.
  • Communicates to the charge RN, manager, and director important problems and issues.
  • Maintains and promotes a clean, neat, and organized environment of specialty carts and supplies.
  • Promotes a positive learning/working environment to promote staff satisfaction.
  • Provides updates and training on an ongoing basis to all staff members in the operating room.
  • Displays professional commitment and supports the unit team by promoting unity and teamwork among coworkers by maintaining a positive attitude and positive working relationships.
  • Responsible for understanding and participating in the organization-wide Performance Improvement Program through orientation, education, departmental and interdepartmental quality control, performance improvement, and quality planning activities.

A surgical technician with four to five years of current experience.

 Previous lead surgical technician experience preferred.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Basic Life Support
  • CST from the NBSTSA (National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting)

Pay Transparency

The hourly rate range for this position is $34.32- $56.19. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California Arcadia Hospital considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, State, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.

In addition to the Surgical Technician position, the Lead Surgical Technician is a procedural specialist that leads the staff in the delivery of care that is consistent with quality standards. Acts as a clinical expert and clinical resource for staff, especially within the scope of their specialty. Provides input for assignment planning and patient scheduling to ensure that patient needs, and staff competencies are equitable. Able to detect and provide solutions for scheduling oversites. Facilitates and acts as a resource for problem solving and promotes communication and collaboration with staff and physicians to achieve goals. Works closely with surgeons to create, update, and maintain surgeon preference cards and custom pack contents. Communicates updates to staff on an ongoing basis. Responsible for the completeness and availability of supplies for specialty instrumentation and equipment, and works closely with Materials Management, vendors, and Sterile Processing Department to ensure patient needs are met. Demonstrates investment in the overall forward movement of the unit and the organization. Applies good interpersonal and communication process utilizing verbal and non-verbal skills to achieve organizational service goals of customer satisfaction and a positive work environment.
