Full Job Description
The Role

We are looking for a Lead Software Engineer to drive the technical direction and execution of Bankjoy's new kids and family financial empowerment product.

This is a hands-on technical leadership role. You will own the architecture, lead a small high-performing engineering team, and work closely with Product, Design, and QA to build a product that is secure, scalable, and genuinely delightful for families and their children. You'll be embedded in a fast-moving startup environment where your decisions directly shape the product.

The ideal candidate brings deep experience in banking, payments, or financial wellness technology, with strong proficiency in Angular and .NET Core, and ideally some exposure to mobile app development. You must be based in or willing to work Eastern Time Zone hours.
What You'll Do

Technical Leadership & Architecture
  • Own the technical direction and architecture for Bankjoy's kids and family financial empowerment product, designing systems that are scalable, secure, maintainable, and built for a regulated financial environment
  • Lead solution design and quarterly planning, guiding architectural and technology decisions in alignment with product and business goals
  • Ensure systems meet financial industry standards including security, compliance, and data privacy requirements
  • Provide technical guidance and code reviews to maintain engineering best practices across the team

Execution & Delivery
  • Break down initiatives into milestones and deliverables, managing scope, dependencies, risks, and technical debt
  • Monitor delivery progress and communicate risks or blockers proactively to ensure timely, high-quality releases
  • Balance delivering business value with maintaining long-term system health and avoiding over-engineering

Hands-On Development
  • Contribute directly to coding, testing, debugging, and development, this is not a purely managerial role
  • Build and maintain backend services using C#, .NET Core, and SQL Server
  • Develop frontend components using TypeScript and Angular
  • Contribute to or guide mobile app development as the product expands across platforms

Team Leadership & Mentorship
  • Lead and mentor engineers through regular 1:1s, performance feedback, and hands-on coaching
  • Foster a collaborative, high-trust team culture that emphasizes quality, ownership, and continuous learning
  • Hire and onboard engineering talent as the Sequoias Circle team grows

Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Partner with Product and Design to shape the product roadmap, define feature scope, and provide accurate technical estimates
  • Work closely with QA to define testing standards, quality gates, and release readiness criteria
  • Collaborate with Bankjoy's platform and security teams to ensure Sequoias Circle meets shared infrastructure and compliance standards

Quality & Production
  • Oversee unit test coverage, integration testing, and CI/CD pipeline quality
  • Establish monitoring, alerting, and observability practices to ensure production reliability
  • Participate in on-call rotation and respond to production incidents with clear RCA and retrospective processes

What You Bring
  • 8+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 2 years in a technical leadership or lead engineer role
  • Domain experience in banking, payments, financial wellness, or financial empowerment technology. Candidates without this background will not be considered
  • Strong proficiency in C#, .NET Core, Entity Framework, and SQL Server, this is the core backend stack
  • Strong proficiency in Angular and TypeScript, this is a required frontend skill, not optional
  • Proven ability to architect scalable, secure, and high-performing systems in a regulated financial environment
  • Experience leading engineering teams, setting direction, coaching engineers, and driving delivery without sacrificing quality
  • Strong understanding of security, compliance, and data privacy requirements in financial applications
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure, containerization, microservices, and CI/CD pipelines
  • Must be available to work Eastern Time Zone hours, this is a firm requirement
  • Comfortable operating in a high-growth startup environment, you build the process, not just run it

Nice to Have
  • Mobile app development experience (iOS, Android, or cross-platform frameworks such as React Native or MAUI), strong preference for candidates with this background
  • Experience building consumer-facing financial apps, especially products for families, kids, or financial education
  • Familiarity with credit union or community banking platforms and integrations
  • Background in financial wellness, budgeting tools, or savings products
  • Experience integrating with core banking systems or third-party financial APIs

What You Get
  • A fast-paced and collaborative environment
  • Competitive compensation
  • Stock options at a well-funded startup
  • We cover 100% of medical, dental, and vision premiums for individuals on our base plan, with significant contributions toward all other plan options (USA).
  • We cover 100% of extended medical, dental, and vision premiums for you and your family under our single, comprehensive plan (Canada).
  • Retirement plan with 4% company matching
  • 8 weeks paid parental leave for birthing parents, 4 weeks for non-birthing
