Position Summary

The Scrum Master position within the Refining IT aligned Digital Product Delivery Services group is a critical delivery role focused on driving digital transformation across the refining organization. This role serves as a servant leader and coach for the Agile teams, facilitating team events and processes, coaching and supporting teams in delivering value. The Scrum Master in Refining Digital will have a persistent focus on relentless improvement in how MPC uses technology that enables our business. The SM will work closely with Product Owners and other product teams. The role will provide daily guidance to the team to ensure alignment of goals and objectives, remove impediments, and, most importantly, hold teams accountable for delivering commitments and value.

This position belongs to a family of jobs with increasing responsibility, competency, and skill level. Actual position title and pay grade will be based on the selected candidate's experience and qualifications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Establishes Agile practices (Scrum or Kanban) for multiple teams that may be more complex by creating optimal environments for development and collaboration.
  • Oversees specific project or team schedules, tasks, and resource requirements; Coaches, facilitates, and may participate in decision-making for resourcing multiple teams or teams-of-teams.
  • Program Delivery Facilitation: Facilitates coordination across multiple Agile teams, Product Owners, delivery partners, and stakeholders to manage dependencies, support Program Increment (PI) planning, escalate delivery risks, and promote alignment toward shared business objectives.
  • Cross-Team & Scaled Coordination: Partners with Release Train Engineers (RTEs), Portfolio Managers, and external vendor teams to sync interdependencies during Program Increment (PI) planning and ensure alignment with MPC's broader refining objectives.
  • Product Owner Partnership: Collaborates closely with Product Owners to strengthen backlog health, assist in story mapping, and streamline dependency management without direct reporting ownership.
  • Organizes, conducts, and promotes communications on behalf of large groups and teams of teams to leadership and strategic partners; Facilitates large teams-of-teams events.
  • Guides proactive planning routines and events for teams and teams-of-teams. Ensures adherence to large-scale planning and goal-setting methods to define roles and develop detailed timelines.
  • Identifies opportunities to proactively reduce risk through new processes, procedures, automation, etc., while upholding Agile principles. Shares best practices across the area, department, or company.
  • Identifies critical stakeholders across multiple teams or departments; proactively forms trusted partnerships for collaboration on development, risk, value, etc.
  • Leads and influences best practices in team documentation, shares approaches across multiple areas, and trains and mentors Product Management, Product Owners, etc.
  • Acts as Coach to teams, teams-of-teams, and the organization on how to use Agile/Scrum practices to deliver value to customers by partnering with product teams and removing obstacles, facilitating ceremonies and running backlogs.
  • Develops an Agile maturity roadmap and offers ongoing coaching and support toward Agile adoption.


Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Management Information Systems, Engineering, Business, or other computer-related degree required.
  • Seven (7) or more years of relevant Scrum Master experience required.

  • Metrics Reporting - Metrics reporting involves the systematic collection, analysis, and presentation of quantifiable data to evaluate the performance or progress of a specific process, project, or system. It serves as a valuable tool for informed decision-making and continuous improvement by providing insights into key indicators and trends.
  • Risk Management - The development of policies, procedures, and technologies to mitigate threats from malicious actors and reduce information technology vulnerabilities.
  • Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) - A process used by the software industry to design, develop and test high-quality software.
  • Team Management - Ability to organize, gain the involvement of, and manage diverse work groups and/or task forces to accomplish specific project or unit goals.
  • Workflow Optimization - The process of improving an existing workflow, by reducing operating costs or improving the efficiency of work done.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology, related field or equivalent experience.
7+ years of relevant scrum master experience
