Lead Propulsion Engineer

Boeing Defense, Space & Security is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Lead Propulsion Engineer to join our dynamic team in El Segundo, California. As a propulsion component engineer, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive the design, testing, and certification of propulsion system components, ensuring the highest standards of quality and performance. This position is hybrid, co-located at or near various suppliers supporting Boeing SLS Propulsion Engineering. You will represent the Boeing propulsion engineering team headquartered in Huntsville, Alabama, at the supplier's site, interfacing regularly with the supplier and our internal and external subject matter experts and customers.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Represents the Boeing propulsion engineering team at the supplier's site representing multiple skill areas, which may include internal and external resources and customers.
  • Provides technical integration leadership for the development and execution of project or team plans.
  • Defines requirements for propulsion system components used in vehicle cryogenic fuel / oxidizer, bi-prop / mono-prop, pneumatic, hydraulic or pyrotechnic systems
  • Defines, coordinates and controls the functional and physical interfaces between the components within the propulsion system
  • Develops and maintains envelope drawings (EDs) / component specifications for associated vehicle components to meet customer and regulatory requirements
  • Supports design of propulsion components to meet all subsystem design and performance criteria. Develops rationale needed to make sound technical decisions regarding component design and development
  • Supports use of various testing, analysis, modeling and simulation tools to estimate or calculate component performance
  • Defines and performs propulsion components qualification / certification testing
  • Supports fielded components to assure continued reliability and airworthiness
  • Supports identification and management of propulsion risks, issues, and opportunities: supports development of executable mitigation/capture plans, develops cost and schedule impact estimates, updates risk tracking system and communicates to propulsion RIO Control Board
  • Supports development and maintenance of Supplier Statement of Work (SSOW) for programs developing vehicle components to meet customer and regulatory requirements. Supports Program and Supplier Management in development of plans for, and execution of, material procurement
  • Performs technical evaluations of supplier proposals and coordinates with supplier management and cost account management to develop budgets for supplier efforts
  • Performs component failure investigations and non-conformance closures through Material Review Board (MRB) and other internal and customer boards. This includes component issues that emerge at the supplier and/or the vehicle production facility. Coordinates with Boeing Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and other Integrated Product Team (IPT) members as needed to resolve issue
  • Supports execution of technical interchange meetings and component reviews. For example: supplier requirements review (SRR), design reviews (PDR / CDR), acceptance reviews, test readiness reviews (TRR), production readiness reviews (PRR)
  • Performs review of supplier data requirement list (SDRL) items and engineering drawings to ensure design and requirement compliance
  • Supports regular (e.g. weekly) technical coordination meetings with Propulsion IPT leadership, other Boeing groups / leaders, suppliers, and customers. Includes reporting component status / issues to internal leadership and customer on a regular basis. Assist Cost Account Managers in program baseline status weekly updates as needed
  • Supports and coordinates work scope with other engineers as assigned
  • Compares actual results to baseline plan to assess project performance, efficiencies, productivity and lessons learned.
  • Works under general supervision with increasing independence, demonstrating sound engineering judgment
  • Ability to travel up to 10% of the time


The position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a "US Person" as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required. "US Person" includes US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.

This position requires the ability to obtain access to a National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) facility.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology (including Manufacturing Technology), Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or non-US equivalent qualifications directly related to the work statement
  • Typically, 9 or more years' related work experience
  • Basic office software applications


Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and/or Astrodynamics Engineering
  • Master of Science Degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Astrodynamics Engineering, and/or Engineering Management
  • Previous experience leading an engineering team in a production environment
  • Previous experience with propulsion system assembly and testing
  • Ability to effectively communicate at all levels of management, customers, and partners, verbal and written
  • Ability to build a safe environment of inclusion, transparency, and trust
  • Leadership skills to lead and influence positive outcomes
  • Previous experience in leading, mentoring, and engaging individuals and teams
  • Experience providing active mentorship and career guidance
