Position Summary

Data, Analytics & AI (DA&AI) is focused on creating trusted, reusable data products that power business outcomes across Marathon Petroleum's value streams. Through a value stream-aligned delivery model, we connect data, analytics, and AI capabilities to strategic priorities while enabling consistency, governance, and reuse across enterprise data domains.

Our Data Product Managers play a key role in defining and delivering enterprise data products that enable business decision-making, operational optimization, and advanced analytics. As a Data Product Manager, you are responsible for data product discovery and design in partnership with our Digital Partners and business stakeholders for an assigned enterprise domain (Commercial, Midstream, Refining, or Corporate functions).

The position requires a strong blend of product management, data strategy, and business domain expertise, with accountability for translating business problems into scalable, high-quality data products (e.g., curated datasets, data models, analytics-ready assets, and AI/ML enablement). You will partner closely with other product teams to deliver reusable and well-architected data products that drive measurable business value.

Success in this role requires strong sense of ownership and a bias for action.

This position belongs to a family of jobs with increasing responsibility, competency, and skill level. Actual position title and pay grade will be based on the selected candidate's experience and qualifications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develops and governs domain-driven data product strategy and portfolio, aligned to business outcomes, global processes, and enterprise priorities, ensuring measurable value, analytics enablement, and reuse.
  • Defines and standardizes domain data concepts, entities, relationships, and KPI logic, ensuring consistency across business units and systems.
  • Leads data product roadmap and prioritization, aligning capabilities and data assets to business value, data availability, and enterprise standards.
  • Translates business needs into logical data models, data contracts, and product structures, enabling governed, reusable, and scalable data products.
  • Establishes and enforces data governance, quality, lineage, metadata, and stewardship standards, ensuring data products are trusted, compliant, and fit for purpose.
  • Ensures data products are discoverable, governed, and continuously improved across their lifecycle, maintaining alignment with enterprise frameworks and standards.
  • Partners with Data and Solution Architects to align data products with enterprise architecture, data models, and integration patterns, ensuring scalability and interoperability.
  • Owns and prioritizes the data product backlog, translating strategy into executable work while coordinating cross-team and cross-platform dependencies to ensure aligned delivery.
  • Engages senior leaders to align on data priorities, definitions, and product direction, driving value-based investment decisions and resolving cross-domain challenges.
  • Analyzes data usage, quality, and product performance to refine direction, improve accessibility, and maximize value realization.
  • Drives collaboration and innovation in data products and analytics enablement, while clearly communicating product strategy, design, and value across technical and business stakeholders.
  • Develops customer and internal facing product development strategies with superior user experience across multiple verticals, including vision goals, and customer needs; accountable for complex/critical product and/or product lines, up to an entire portfolio of products.
  • Has accountability for leading the development of product roadmaps, prioritizing feature releases, and aligning them with business objectives. Drives cross-functional collaboration to gather insights, prioritize initiatives, and plan releases effectively.
  • Collaborates closely with portfolio teams, stakeholders, and business leaders to proactively identify and address challenges that arise during product development, ensuring successful execution of the product strategy.
  • Organizes stakeholder priorities and works with teams in order to align needs with resources ensuring cadence with customer value, business value, and strategic fit. Consults with leadership, and various teams to provide value-driven priority and strategic decision-making.
  • Prioritizes the product backlog, processes and release plan for multiple features for a complex or higher profile product and plans the coordination of interdependencies with scrum teams and across lines of business.
  • Works with other teams, ensures team is aligned around similar goals and objectives / cross-team prioritization. Carries out ongoing analysis of product capability themes in order to support product direction.
  • Delivers product innovation, definition, deliverables planning (roadmap), and design of entirely new products to deliver against team and company goals.
  • Interprets and communicates product development builds on cross-departmental knowledge and puts the customer at the heart of all product changes.
  • Engages senior cross functional leaders and proactively addresses and resolves issues, fostering effective communication, and promoting alignment between business and operations teams, product, engineering, and customer support teams, as needed.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Information Systems, related field or equivalent work experience required.
  • Product Owner certification or Product Management certification required. MBA or equivalent preferred.
  • 7+ years of relevant product manager experience required.
  • Experience delivering or managing data products, analytics platforms, or data-driven solutions in an enterprise environment.
  • Strong understanding of data ecosystems, including data warehousing, data lakes, ETL/ELT processes, and modern data architectures.
  • Proven experience working with cross-functional data and analytics teams, including Data Engineering, Data Science, and BI/Visualization.
  • Experience defining data requirements, data models, or analytics use cases tied to business outcomes.
  • Understanding of data governance, data quality, and metadata management practices.
  • Experience supporting AI/ML or advanced analytics use cases is preferred.
  • Refining industry experience preferred, with a strong understanding of refinery operations, manufacturing processes, and the data domains that support operational performance, reliability, optimization, planning, and financial outcomes.
