College Board - Lead Mobile EngineerLocation: This is a remote role. Candidates who live near CB offices have the option of being fully remote or hybrid (Tuesday and Wednesday in office). All CB employees are required to occasionally travel to meet in person for business purposes.
Role Type: This is a full-time position
About the Team: The Deliver team is responsible for building and operating the core products that deliver high-stakes digital assessments to millions of students each year. Today, this includes supporting flagship programs such as the
SAT and
AP exams, while advancing the technology that enables secure, reliable, and scalable test delivery across a wide range of devices and environments. The team focuses on delivering high-integrity proctoring and assessment experiences
, ensuring performance, security, and consistency for students and educators at scale.
Our responsibilities span two primary domains:
We own the end-to-end student testing experience, including:
- Bluebook - the student-facing desktop application used to take digital exams
- Mission Control - a large-scale, AWS-based backend that supports authentication, test delivery, telemetry, resilience, and security
- Test & Results Packaging - systems that ingest, digitize, secure, package, and deliver test content to students through the Bluebook client
Together, these systems must operate with
extreme reliability, security, and performance at national scale.
We also build the tools educators rely on during live testing, a new product consisting of desktop and mobile experiences that allow proctors to:
- Monitor student progress in real time
- Detect and investigate anomalies
- Troubleshoot student issues on test day
This work directly impacts test integrity, educator confidence, and student outcomes.
About the Opportunity: As a
Lead Mobile Engineer, you will
own and drive the architecture, design, and delivery of native mobile applications across iOS and Android. You will lead the development of scalable, secure, and high-performance solutions, setting engineering standards and guiding technical direction for mobile platforms.
The College Board, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing excellence and equity in education, delivers digital assessment experiences at scale. As part of this mission, we are building next-generation
proctoring applications for high-stakes exams that operate reliably across a wide range of devices and operating systems. Working within the Information Technology division and in partnership with product, security, and operations teams, the
Lead Mobile Engineer will define and implement solutions that ensure performance, reliability, and integrity of test delivery.
This role requires deep expertise in
native mobile development (Swift for iOS and Kotlin/Android SDK), along with experience integrating with
OS-level and device capabilities (e.g., permissions, networking, device controls). You will lead the design of solutions that ensure consistent, secure behavior across diverse environments, including
ChromeOS, macOS, and Windows ecosystems where applicable.
The ideal candidate has experience building
cloud-connected mobile applications, and is comfortable working with
serverless and event-driven architectures. You will drive the adoption of
modular, scalable mobile architecture patterns, guide teams in implementing robust client-cloud integrations, and promote engineering excellence through
CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code, and modern DevOps practices.
In this role, you will: Design and Development (60%) - Own and drive the architecture of native mobile applications (iOS and Android), defining modular boundaries, component strategies, and platform patterns
- Design and deliver scalable, secure solutions leveraging native mobile capabilities and cloud-native architectures on popular platforms such as AWS, GCP and Azure
- Lead the integration of OS-level and device capabilities (e.g., permissions, networking, device controls) to enable secure, consistent behavior across environments
- Translate ambiguous requirements into clear technical direction, guiding teams from concept through production
- Establish and evolve reusable mobile frameworks, shared components, and engineering standards across teams
- Drive prototyping and technical validation for new capabilities, ensuring solutions scale beyond initial implementation
Team Operations & Success (30%) - Provide technical leadership and mentorship, setting the bar for native mobile development, code quality, and system design
- Lead architectural discussions and make high-impact technical decisions, balancing performance, security, and scalability
- Drive alignment across product, security, and platform teams, ensuring cohesive mobile-to-cloud integration
- Own resolution of complex, system-level production issues, particularly across devices, operating systems, and environments
- Champion and evolve CI/CD, observability, and DevOps practices for mobile applications
- Drive adoption of modern mobile architecture patterns (e.g., modular, layered design) and improve engineering standards across the team
Learning & Sharing (10%) - Define and influence mobile engineering strategy, particularly across iOS and Android platforms
- Stay ahead of trends in mobile platforms, OS-level capabilities, and secure application design
- Mentor engineers and elevate technical capabilities across teams
About you, you have: - 7-10+ years of experience building and delivering hybrid or native mobile applications (iOS and Android)
- Strong expertise in Swift (iOS) and Kotlin/Android SDK, with deep understanding of mobile platform internals
- Proven ability to lead end-to-end delivery of complex mobile applications using modular, scalable architecture patterns
- Experience designing applications that integrate with OS-level and device capabilities (e.g., permissions, networking, device controls)
- Experience working across desktop ecosystems and understanding cross-environment constraints
- Familiarity with building cloud-connected mobile applications on popular platforms such as AWS, GCP and Azure
- Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and release processes for mobile applications
- Experience with infrastructure as code
- Strong understanding of application security, including authentication, secure communication, and device-level considerations
- Experience implementing observability and monitoring (logs, metrics, alerts) for production systems
- Experience with React, TypeScript, or modern web technologies, particularly in support of cross-platform or hybrid applications
- Proven ability to mentor engineers, drive technical decisions, and influence architecture across teams
- Excellent problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field (preferred)
All roles at College Board require: - A passion for expanding educational and career opportunities and mission-driven work
- Curiosity and enthusiasm for emerging technologies, with a willingness to experiment with and adopt new AI-driven solutions and comfort with learning and applying new digital tools independently and proactively.
- Clear and concise communication skills, written and verbal
- A learner's mindset and a commitment to growth: welcoming diverse perspectives, giving and receiving timely, respectful feedback, and continuously improving through iterative learning and user input.
- A drive for impact and excellence: solving complex problems, making data-informed decisions, prioritizing what matters most, and continuously improving through learning, user input, and external benchmarking.
- A collaborative and empathetic approach: working across differences, fostering trust, and contributing to a culture of shared success
- Authorization to work in the United States
