Job Title: Lead, Mechanical Engineer (Mass Properties)

Job Code: 39461

Job Location: Greenville, TX or Plano, TX (On-Site)

Job Schedule: 1st Shift 9/80

Job Description:

L3Harris is seeking a Mass Properties Engineer to join our Aeronautical Systems Engineering team. In this role, you will lead complex mass properties analyses, weight control activities, and report for major fixed-wing aircraft modifications while guiding technical approaches across multiple programs. You will also mentor engineers, support bids and labor forecasts, and drive process improvements that improve execution, affordability, and airworthiness compliance.

Essential Functions:
  • Lead mass properties analyses, weight control activities, and report for major aircraft modifications using computer aided design (CAD) tools, Microsoft Excel, and related engineering systems.
  • Calculate and estimate component weights, moment arms, and mass moments of inertia from engineering drawings, CAD models, vendor data, and aircraft records.
  • Evaluate aircraft weight and balance impacts resulting from multiple concurrent modifications and develop aircraft mass distributions in support of loads development.
  • Establish and maintain weight control plans, target allocations, and status reporting for weight-critical programs.
  • Prepare aircraft weight charts, inventories, and engineering reports that document analytical results and actual aircraft weighing.
  • Lead mass properties tasks across several contracts and coordinate with design, structural, loads, manufacturing, flight test, and certification stakeholders.
  • Mentor less experienced engineers and provide technical leadership on methods, tools, estimates, and execution planning.
  • Support new business pursuits by developing engineering estimates, reviewing statements of work, and contributing to recurring labor forecasts.
  • Leading complex technical tasks or project initiatives with minimal oversight and providing guidance to other engineers.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, plus experience using CAD models and engineering drawings to support mass properties analysis.
  • Must be able to travel to and from the flight line and work in aircraft hangar environments, including boarding and exiting aircraft when required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret security clearance.
  • Travel up to 5% as required to support aircraft weighing, flight line activity, program reviews, and customer meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree with nine (9) years of aircraft mass properties, fixed-wing weight and balance analysis, and weight control for aircraft modification programs experience.
  • Graduate Degree or equivalent with seven (7) years of aircraft mass properties, fixed-wing weight and balance analysis, and weight control for aircraft modification programs experience.
  • In lieu of a degree, minimum of 13 years of aircraft mass properties, fixed-wing weight and balance analysis, and weight control for aircraft modification programs experience.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.

Preferred Additional Skills:
  • Experience with Automated Weight and Balance System (AWBS) software or comparable mass properties tools.
  • Understanding of FAA and military weight and balance reporting requirements and airworthiness documentation.
  • Experience with aircraft weighing, inventory, and maintaining certified weight records.
  • Advanced skill in managing large data sets and automating calculations in Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience leading engineering estimates, recurring labor forecasts, or weight control boards for multiple programs.
  • Active Secret security clearance.
