Job Description:

The Histotechnologist Lead plays a critical role in the diagnosis and treatment of disease  by preparing tissue specimens for microscopic examination. Working directly under the supervision of the Laboratory Manager or Director, the Histotechnologist is responsible for preparing, processing, staining and mounting tissue specimens for review by the pathologists. The individual will ensure accurate and timely processing and handling of specimens. The individual will support training and implementation of laboratory projects and initiatives and will work closely with the Laboratory Manager or Director to monitor performance metrics, turnaround times, and help design workflows.

Responsibilities:

  • Supports the Laboratory Manager or Director with scheduling efforts and workflow design.

  • Responsible for accessioning, grossing, embedding, microtomy, performing H&E and Papanicolaou staining, and the coverslipping of all surgical/cytologic specimen slides for microscopic analysis.

  • Loading specimens on the processor, ensuring quality and timeliness of production.

  • Modify and validate procedures and methodologies for immunohistochemistry, special staining, and other related staining.

  • Organize cases by matching slides with appropriate paperwork and/or laying slides out in slide folders.

  • Document and resolve any quality issues, including (but not limited to), inadequate grossing, tissue measurement and/or block discordance, deviance from specimen handling procedures, etc.  

  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, such as microtomes, tissue processors, embedding machines, automated strainers, as well as troubleshooting equipment and automated instrumentation within the laboratory.

  • Assist the Laboratory Manager meeting department regulatory agency requirements (CAP, CLIA, etc.).

  • Perform quality control procedures according to established laboratory protocol and regulatory requirements, and complete necessary documentation.

  • Recognize and address any deviations from established protocols.

  • Maintain meticulous records of specimens, procedures, and results.

  • Ensure proper labeling, tracking, and documentation of samples.

  • Monitor supplies and maintain adequate inventory levels.

  • Properly dispose of chemical hazardous waste according to laboratory and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and/or completion of a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) Accredited Certificate Program is required and will be verified prior to employment.

  • ASCP HT or HTL certification is required and will be verified prior to employment.

  • Minimum of five years of Histology experience.

  • Immunohistochemistry experience is strongly desired.

  • Digital Pathology experience is preferred.

Travel:

  • This position does not require travel.

Physical Requirements for the Job:

  • Regularly required to sit and stand for extended periods.

  • Involves standing, sitting, walking, bending, stooping, and twisting. Adjusting visual acuity to distinguish fine details and objects at specific distance.

  • Requires full range of body motion, including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.

  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 10 lbs. and occasionally lift and/or move items up to 25 lb.

Job Type: Full-Time

Pay Range: $40.00 - $43.00 per hour.

Actual compensation offered to candidates is based on work experience, education, skill level, and geographic location. Compensation may vary depending on the state or region in which the position is located, in accordance with applicable laws.
