Lead Estimator

Office Location: 601 First Street NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49504

Position Classification: Full-Time Regular

Key Responsibilities
  • Foster an environment of strong teamwork, strength through diversity in thought and background & belonging.
  • Partner with the Director of Preconstruction to lead team initiatives and support overall department performance.
  • Lead, oversee, and actively participate in all cost estimating activities, with a focus on complex or high-value projects.
  • Review and validate estimates to ensure accuracy, completeness, and competitiveness prior to client presentation.
  • Have knowledge and understanding of commercial construction projects ranging in costs from $100,000 to $200 Million.
  • Create Conceptual, Schematic Design (SD), Design Development (DD), and Construction Document (CD) budgets and estimates.
  • Have ability to perform detailed quantity takeoffs across all trades involved in a project.
  • Utilize estimating software - Procore, Microsoft Project, Microsoft Office Suite, and Bluebeam.
  • Have ability to read and understand project plans and specifications at all levels of design.
  • Assist with hard bid/low bid project assembly and strategy.
  • Approve project proposals/estimate packages prior to presentation.
  • Lead and contribute to value engineering efforts to provide cost-effective solutions.
  • Create and review project-specific Basis of Design documentation for presentations and exhibits.
  • Maintain proper tracking of all projects/estimates in company management software.
  • Attend and participate in project-specific interviews and client presentations.
  • Support Project Managers and Operations teams as a key partner in preconstruction and project planning meetings.
  • Identify and implement improvements to estimating processes, tools, and standards.
  • Maintain a high degree of integrity, loyalty, and honesty; not divulging confidential information pertaining to the company's operations or bids to outside parties.
  • Assist in managing project estimator assignments, project workflow and schedule tracking.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management or related field, and minimum of 8 years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex estimates and influence project outcomes.
  • Strong ability to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple tasks.
  • Proven leadership and mentoring capabilities with the ability to develop team members.
  • Superior oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including advanced Excel skills.
  • High level of analytical thinking and problem-solving ability.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across teams and challenge assumptions constructively.
  • Maintain a high degree of integrity, loyalty, and honesty; not divulging confidential information pertaining to the company's operations or bids to outside parties.

Environmental Factors and Working Conditions

The work environment for this position is a typical office environment with occasional construction site visits. When in the office, the physical demands require the ability to sit for long periods of time. Intermittent movement, such as accessing centrally located office equipment, lifting of 35 lbs, bending, stooping, kneeling, and climbing, may be necessary to perform the requirements of this position. Site visits may subject the individual to hazards commonly associated with construction. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to be worn as required on project sites and in the warehouse.
