Full Job Description
Lead Desktop / Client Server Engineer The Lead Desktop / Client Server Engineer will serve as a technical lead overseeing a team of system engineers and system administrators responsible for the provisioning, installation, and support of Windows Server and VMware infrastructure, Active Directory domains, VDI, VMware vSphere, and VMware Horizon environments. This individual will play a critical role in ensuring the stability, security, and efficiency of enterprise IT operations while also contributing to broader service management and governance activities. Principal responsibilities will include but are not limited to: • Lead, mentor, and oversee a team of system engineers and system administrators in day-to-day operations and project-based work within a Windows environment. • Oversee and contribute to the provisioning, installation, configuration, and ongoing support of Windows Server environments, VMware vSphere, VMware Horizon, VDI solutions, and Active Directory domains. • Provide comprehensive Service Support activities including incident management, problem management, configuration management, change management, release management, enterprise architecture management, and account management, applying quality assurance practices to ensure optimal service operations and minimize adverse impacts on business operations. • Lead Incident Management efforts to restore normal service operations as quickly as possible, coordinating resources and communication to maintain the highest possible levels of service quality and availability. • Drive Problem Management Services to identify root causes of recurring incidents, minimize adverse impacts on the business, and initiate corrective actions to prevent recurrence and improve overall IT infrastructure stability. • Assist with Data Analytics solutions that enable data-driven decision making by providing insights extracted from large data sets, including the development and maintenance of dynamic dashboards that deliver predictive insights to improve efficiencies, support cost savings, and inform strategic organizational decision-making. • Provide consolidated support services to maintain enterprise architecture frameworks, including capturing, documenting, and actively monitoring enterprise architecture to ensure compliance, capacity, sustainability, security posture, and identification of recommended enhancements and efficiencies within the operational infrastructure. • Support NIST-defined Risk Management Framework (RMF) activities, including producing and maintaining security documentation, maintaining and updating RMF compliance artifacts, contributing values for technical controls, supporting automated continuous monitoring activities to ensure ongoing Authorization to Operate (ATO) compliance, and proactively communicating IT operational status that may impact the ATO process. • Provide Special Support Services including special installations and deployments, maintenance, break/fix activities, software upgrades, and other technical activities such as training. • Deliver VIP support for designated Executives and provide periodic event support via walk-in, remote, or onsite locations as required. • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, stakeholders, and organizational leadership to ensure IT services align with mission requirements and support overall business objectives. • Develop and maintain technical documentation, standard operating procedures, and operational runbooks. Education and Experience: • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems, or a related field from an accredited college or university, or equivalent work experience. • 10+ years of experience in Desktop / Client Server Engineering, system administration, or a related IT infrastructure discipline. • 3+ years of experience in a management or team lead role overseeing system engineers and/or system administrators. Required Skills and Competencies: • Top Secret security clearance is required with the ability to acquire an SCI. • Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE) 2012/2016/2019 or modern equivalent (e.g., Microsoft Certified: Windows Server Hybrid Administrator Associate). • CompTIA Security+ CE or Systems Security Certified Practitioner (SSCP). • ITIL v3 Foundation certification. • Exceptional communication skills in English - both written and oral - with the ability to effectively communicate with technical and non-technical stakeholders at all levels of the organization. • Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and direct a team of technical professionals in a dynamic, mission-driven environment. • Extensive hands-on experience with Windows Server environments (2012/2016/2019/2022), including provisioning, configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting. • Strong experience with VMware vSphere, VMware Horizon, and Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) technologies. • Proficiency in Active Directory domain administration, including Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, and user/group management. • Solid understanding of ITSM principles and service support functions including incident management, problem management, change management, configuration management, release management, and account management. • Experience supporting NIST Risk Management Framework (RMF) activities including the creation and maintenance of security documentation, compliance artifacts, and continuous monitoring activities in support of ATO processes. • Experience maintaining and supporting enterprise architecture frameworks and contributing to planning, documentation, and monitoring of enterprise IT infrastructure. • Familiarity with data analytics concepts and the ability to support the development of dashboards and reporting solutions that provide predictive and operational insights for organizational leadership. • Experience providing VIP and executive-level technical support in a professional, responsive, and discreet manner. • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with the ability to perform root cause analysis and drive resolution of complex technical issues. Desired Skills and Competencies: • Experience working in a federal government IT environment supporting a bureau or agency-level infrastructure. • ITIL v3 Intermediate or ITIL 4 Foundation certification. • Experience with Microsoft Azure or hybrid cloud environments. • Familiarity with PowerShell scripting for automation of administrative tasks. • Experience with enterprise monitoring and management tools (e.g., SCOM, SCCM/MECM, SolarWinds). • Knowledge of cybersecurity best practices and frameworks beyond RMF, including NIST SP 800-53 controls. • Experience with Microsoft 365 and modern endpoint management solutions such as Microsoft Intune. • Project Management Professional (PMP) or equivalent project management experience. • CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner (CASP+) or other advanced security certifications.
