Full Job Description
The Coding Quality Educator, Lead is responsible for the strategic development, execution, and continuous improvement of coder and provider education programs across UVA Health. This role provides leadership and mentorship to coding quality educators, ensures consistent educational standards, and collaborates with clinical and administrative stakeholders to support optimal documentation, coding accuracy, and regulatory compliance.
The Lead Educator oversees the creation of education curricula, educator onboarding and skill development, refinement of teaching methodologies, coordination of coder and provider training programs, and integration of audit findings into educational strategy. This position also serves as the primary point of contact for MD Audit software used by the education team and supports system-level initiatives that enhance coding quality and clinical documentation.

Education Program Leadership
  • Leads the development, implementation, and continuous enhancement of coder, provider, and resident education programs related to documentation, coding accuracy, and regulatory compliance.
  • Collaborates with managers and stakeholders to build an enterprise-wide education strategy and curriculum.
  • Creates and maintains educational materials for various formats (classroom, virtual, e-learning modules, 1:1 sessions).
  • Develops standardized training pathways and ensures consistency in messaging, tools, and instructional quality.

Educator Team Leadership & Staff Development
  • Provides mentorship, guidance, and subject matter expertise to coding quality educators.
  • Leads onboarding, training, and ongoing professional development of new and existing educators.
  • Facilitates workshops, seminars, and skill-development sessions to refine educator instructional methods and communication skills.
  • Serves as the primary resource for escalated education questions, complex documentation challenges, and cross-departmental inquiries.

Coder & Provider Support
  • Conducts training sessions for coders, providers, residents, and departmental staff to reinforce documentation, coding standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborates with clinical chairs, department administrators, coding leadership, and revenue cycle partners to identify training needs and address documentation gaps.
  • Provides proactive education in response to identified trends, audit results, payer changes, or clinical program needs.

Audit Collaboration & Compliance
  • Analyzes audit findings to identify education opportunities, documentation trends, and areas requiring improvement.
  • Supports development of education-based corrective action strategies following audit findings.
  • Assists with ongoing compliance monitoring and ensures educational practices align with federal, state, and payer regulations.
  • Serves as the lead point of contact for MD Audit software, supporting user training, troubleshooting, and integration of audit analytics into education planning.

Operations, Communication & Stakeholder Engagement
  • Acts as a liaison between coding teams, clinical departments, educators, compliance, and administrative leaders.
  • Ensures timely communication of regulatory updates, coding guidelines, and documentation changes to stakeholders.
  • Oversees incoming communication requests and ensures accurate and timely response by the education team.
  • Leads or participates in organizational committees, departmental meetings, and workgroups related to coding quality and education.

Quality Assurance & Continuous Improvement
  • Assists with quality assurance monitoring to validate coding accuracy and documentation compliance.
  • Utilizes audit results, performance metrics, and operational data to refine training programs and educational strategies.
  • Updates departmental processes, guidelines, and training materials in response to regulatory or organizational changes.

Other Duties
  • Supports special projects and strategic initiatives as assigned.

Contributes to long-term planning for education, quality improvement, and operational excellence.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Bachelor's degree required or relevant experience may be considered in lieu of Bachelor's degree.

Experience: A minimum of five years of experience required in a complex hospital setting Knowledge of third party billing and reimbursement methodologies required Understanding of CPT level II and III HCPCS and hospital charging methods is essential General comprehension of medical terminology is necessary.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Job requires sitting for prolonged periods, frequently traveling (no more than two miles); Repetitive motion: (Typing). Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull less than 20lbs. May be exposed to cold, heat and outdoor climate.

The starting base rate for this role is $85,000.00 annually. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education.
