Position Summary:Performs first line supervisory work involved in directing, coordinating and assisting in the activities of Police Officers assigned to general police duties. Assumes operational responsibility of a shift/team. Supervise a group of subordinates. Works within the chain of command under the supervision of an administrative superior officer, generally the Lieutenant.

The Sergeant is the mid-point position of the Police Department, serving as a supervisor, trainer and co-worker with the sworn department members, while assisting the department administration by implementing their philosophies and goals. The Sergeant is charged with balancing these diverse expectations while maintaining efficiency, morale, productivity and professionalism within the staff assigned to their supervision. From assisting with police decisions with the Chief of Police, to managing a crisis call on the street, the Sergeant must be flexible and multi-talented to effectively perform the tasks expected of them. Residency Requirements:Must live within 50 miles from the intersection of Grand Avenue and 8th Street. Total travel time cannot exceed 60 minutes at posted driving speeds.
Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:The incumbent will have achieved the rank of Sergeant or higher for a minimum of five years. Extensive knowledge of Federal, State and City laws and ordinances. Considerable knowledge of law enforcement principles from the standpoints of application of the law to the supervision and evaluation of personnel. In-depth knowledge of the City area and its resources. Organizational skills, leadership qualities, and strong communication skills both verbal and written are required
Skills:- Qualify in the Departments fire arms program.
- Use the department computer systems and word process software.
- Generate complete, prompt, and professional reports, staff reports in accordance with department policies.
- Be a good resource and time manager.
Knowledge of:- Goals and objectives of the Glenwood Police Department
- Department organization and structure and general function of City government.
- Laws, codes, and statues as they relate to investigative techniques and procedures, rules of evidence, and the rights of suspects and defendants.
- Modern police practices, methods and principles of crime prevention, to include community oriented policing and problem solving
- Principles of traffic control and accident prevention and investigation.
- Principles of supervision, organization and personnel administration.
Ability to:- Understand and execute oral and written instructions.
- Assist in developing and managing portions of the Department budget.
- Operate assigned equipment skillfully, safely and in conformance with laws and regulations.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrators, subordinates, co-workers, press, allied agencies and the public.
- Counsel subordinates when appropriate. Use proper documentation.
- May be required to pass a psychological examination and/or practical examination.
- Pass all Department and State mandated training requirements.
