Position Summary
Laser Applications Engineers (LAEs) work with high technology companies, government laboratories, and research institutes around the world to provide analysis and execution of complex laser process applications. They develop, simulate, and perform laser processes for both customer applications and internal product applications. LAE IIs are generally assigned to applications with moderate complexity and will rely on the Applications Laboratory Manager to fulfill some duties.
Essential Functions
- Reviews customer documentation and analyzes customer applications
- Guides dialog with customer to gain insights and understanding on customer's process and to make determinations on laser process recommendations
- Travel to customer locations to assist in application development or laser system calibration
- Makes laser process or laser scanner technology recommendations
- Observe, document, and explain impact of optical setup on laser process
- Prepares proposals of work and application reports
- Provide estimates and scope of proposed work
- Perform laser system testing and analysis to support Aerotech's selling process
- Perform fundamental laser processing research to support product development
- Guide other engineers in effective usage of lab systems
- Generate technical content for white papers and application notes
- Read and interpret technical manuscripts and publications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong knowledge of laser processing and motion control
- Ultrafast and nanosecond laser knowledge
- Flat and Cylindrical processing
- Understand process of developing laser recipe
- Knowledge of 2D, 3D, and 5D laser machining processes
- Intermediate knowledge of optics principles and impact on laser process
- Strong sense of urgency, initiative and a drive to get things done correctly
- Ability to work open ended problems that may not have a singular solution
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
- Knowledgeable in principles of advanced mathematics, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry
- Proficiency in spreadsheet type math
- Intermediate knowledge of engineering programming languages (e.g. python, matlab)
- Strong understanding of G-Code and other machine tool code
- Ability to work with equations of motion, fundamental mechanical concepts, and servo control theory
- Interpret mechanical drawings and electrical schematics
- Skilled at writing customer reports and providing effective review for others
- Effective communication skills; able to effectively present technical information to technical audiences.
- Able to travel domestically and internationally
- Works well in individual and team environments
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in an Engineering or Applied Physics discipline from an accredited college or university required
- At least five years of experience
- Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
- Must be authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship. Aerotech does not provide US work authorization sponsorship for this position. OPT and CPT visa holders are not eligible for employment if they will need work authorization sponsorship at any time in the future.
