POSITION PROFILE

Job Title:Laboratory Supervisor

Reports to (title): Laboratory Manager / Senior Laboratory Manager

Department: Laboratory

Basic Purpose: What is the overall function of the job?

  • Maximize human, equipment and financial resources on a daily basis and ensure that they are used appropriately
  • Suggest new processes and procedures that will increase the market share, profile and profitability of the department and Bureau Veritas
  • Facilitate the production of high quality defensible data, safely and on time
  • Ensure methods in use meet current and proposed regulatory guidelines
  • Organize and direct staff, to maintain a good working environment and ensure continuous improvement in productivity and efficiency

Key Accountability/Responsibilities: What specifically is this job expected to accomplish?

  • Lead and develop staff, including responsibility for recruitment of new employees, setting objectives, evaluating performance and expectations, coaching and mentoring, working jointly with employees in the development of their career path, ensuring that adequate training is provided
  • Coordinate requests or recommend resource planning, e.g. need for additional staff or equipment
  • Monitor lab supplies and equipment
  • Develop strategic plans with the objective of preparing the department for continued growth
  • Provides feedback during budgeting process as required
  • Elevate significant & complex resource issues to Manager
  • Develop and nurture ongoing relationship with peers in other internal departments and its customers
  • With the Manager, assist in developing business plans that increase Bureau Veritas' profile in the region
  • Develop and maintain a positive work environment for employees
  • Act as technical resource for Manager, Customer Service and staff
  • Support and comply with all Bureau Veritas policies, Quality System and Health & Safety program
  • Ensure that employees are following the SOP's and work to reduce non-conformances
  • Provide information, instructions and assistance to all staff in order to protect the health and safety of our employees
  • Understand and enforce our EHS Policy as well as the Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Provide all staff with proper, well-maintained equipment, plus any other special personal protective devices which may be required
  • Conduct safety tailgate meetings with staff regularly
  • Conduct weekly PPE audits
  • Participate in monthly worksite inspections of their area
  • Ensure hazard assessments and critical task analysis are done within their area of responsibility
  • Monitor staff and holds them accountable for their indivi
  • Provide information, instructions, and assistance to all employees in order to protect the health and safety of our employees;
  • Understand and enforce HSE Policy as well as the applicable Occupational Health and Safety legislation;
  • Ensure hazard assessments and critical task analysis are done within their areas of responsibilities;
  • Provide resources to ensure employees have proper, well-maintained equipment, plus any other special personal protective devices which may be required;
  • Conduct safety walks of their departments or facilities on monthly basis;
  • Conduct regular safety meetings with their department employees.

Skills and Knowledge: What skills and knowledge are used to carry out job responsibilities and solve problems?

  • B.Sc., technical diploma or equivalent experience
  • Demonstrated success in the role of Senior Analyst
  • 5 years of experience in specific environment of which two (2) years are at a leadership level
  • Up-to-date knowledge of laboratory process and automation
  • Thorough understanding of Bureau Veritas' Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
  • Assess problems and recommends solutions
  • Uses good judgement, trains and assists in resolution of employee relations issues
  • Strong computer skills
  • Good team building, training and coaching skills
  • Accurately follows Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) and instructions
  • Detail oriented with accurate record keeping skills
  • Good time-management, multi-tasking and priority setting skills

  • Internal: Laboratory Operations, Customer Service and Sample Logistics departments

Working Conditions: physical work environment, physical and mental effort, visual/listening attention and travel

  • High level of work production in fast-paced lab environment
  • Flexible working hours, overtime and shift work
  • Changing priorities and balancing workload to meet tight deadlines
  • Some lifting and carrying (up to 40 lbs) and may involve long periods of standing
  • Hazardous materials are handled using established safety procedures and appropriate equipment
