Full Job Description
General Summary of Position

Responsible for coordinating all technical, logistical, and administrative functions to ensure the timely and accurate testing and reporting of clinical laboratory results within established turnaround times.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide oversight of routine histology functions, including processing, embedding, microtomy, and staining.
  • Oversee daily laboratory operations across all shifts to ensure quality standards and turnaround times are consistently met.
  • Maintain quality control standards in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Conduct employee performance evaluations and provide coaching and development.
  • Develop and manage staff schedules to ensure appropriate coverage.
  • Maintain established performance and productivity standards.
  • Monitor test analysis and specimen examination to ensure acceptable levels of analytic performance.
  • Develop, write, and review validation protocols, policies, and procedures for manual, automated, and new testing methodologies.
  • Ensure appropriate corrective actions are taken when test systems deviate from established performance specifications.
  • Verify that patient test results are not released until all corrective actions are completed and systems are functioning properly.
  • Coordinate daily workflow to support timely analysis and reporting of patient samples, including oversight of staff rotations and scheduling (daily, weekly, and monthly).
  • Oversee Quality Assurance (QA), Quality Improvement (QI), and Quality Control (QC) programs to ensure compliance with regulatory and laboratory standards.
  • Maintain adequate inventory levels of reagents and laboratory supplies.
  • Assist in the recruitment, training, and performance evaluation of laboratory staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Minimal Qualifications

Education
Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Histology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a chemical, physical, or biological science required.

Experience
  • 5-7 years of experience in a clinical laboratory setting, including histology and anatomic pathology, required.
  • Demonstrated supervisory or management experience required.

Licenses and Certifications
  • HT or HTL (ASCP) certification preferred.
  • ASCP certification required, or equivalent certification acceptable with extensive histology experience.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to comprehend and follow the policies and procedures for Southern Maryland Hospital Center.
  • Ability to read write and speak or communicate in English to successfully accomplish the essential duties of the position.
