Laboratory Scientist Division of Metabolics, Newborn, and Prenatal Provincial Programs Dept. of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine BC Children's Hospital & BC Women's Hospital, Vancouver, BC Regular, Full-Time The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine's Division of Metabolics, Newborn, and Prenatal Provincial Programs, at the BC Children's and BC Women's Hospitals, is seeking a qualified and highly motivated Ph.D. Laboratory Scientist with demonstrated expertise in bioanalytical techniques and mass spectrometry-based method development. This appointment requires an accomplished scientist with superior communication skills and the ability to collaborate and contribute to the development of a collegial environment.
The Department provides laboratory and pathology diagnostic care to BC's perinatal women, infants, and children, including those with the most acute and complex conditions, and includes provincial specialty laboratories such as prenatal screening, newborn screening, biochemical genetics, and inherited constitutional genetics and genomics. The Department's mandate includes working collaboratively with health authorities to establish provincial standards and guidelines, leading pilot projects assessing clinical utility of emerging diagnostic and screening technologies and participating nationally and internationally to promote access to appropriate laboratory care and best practices within BC.
The Division of Metabolics, Newborn, and Prenatal Provincial Programs is responsible for providing both the provincial Newborn and Prenatal screening programs, along with diagnostic and monitoring services for metabolic diseases for both children and adults in BC. The Division is leading the way towards transitioning existing manual biochemical assays onto mass spectrometry platforms for the purpose of high-throughput screening and diagnostic testing. As a Laboratory Scientist you will work as part of a team that includes clinically certified Laboratory Geneticists as well as registered Medical Laboratory Technologists. You will lead the technical development, validation, and implementation of new clinical assays as well as the improvement, troubleshooting and quality assurance of existing clinical assays. With a recommendation for appointment to the Clinical Faculty at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, you will be expected to be actively engaged in academic teaching and clinical research.
Successful candidate must have a PhD in chemistry (organic, bioorganic, or bioanalytical), biochemistry, pharmacology or other related field, and a minimum of 3 years of technical analytical experience with LC-MS method development in the last five years. Preference will be given to individuals with a breadth of experience, including quantitative tandem mass spectrometry and a working knowledge of GC-MS. Ideally, the candidate will have in depth experience developing and validating small molecule LC-MS assays within a regulated environment (e.g., clinical, pharmaceutical, or government laboratory). Familiarity with quality management and clinical accreditation processes would be an asset. You will ideally possess academic qualifications and experience sufficient for consideration of appointment as Clinical Instructor in the UBC Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine. This is a hands-on position that should prove to be both challenging and rewarding, as the work directly affects the lives of newborns, children and adults in our province.
Job Type: Regular, Full Time
Salary Range: $108,147 - $155,461/year. The starting salary for this position would be determined with consideration of the successful candidate's relevant education and experience and would be in alignment with the provincial compensation reference plan. Salary will be prorated accordingly for part time roles.
