Position Description
Tacoma Power's Utility Technology Services (UTS) is seeking a motivated and technically skilled cybersecurity professional to support its cybersecurity operations. This role helps protect enterprise and operational technology environments through security monitoring, threat analysis, investigation, and response activities.

This position offers the opportunity to contribute to the security and reliability of critical utility infrastructure by administering security tools, including SIEM and EDR platforms, conducting threat hunting, and collaborating with cybersecurity, infrastructure, and operational teams.

The position performs daily cybersecurity operations to identify and respond to potential threats, support compliance with cybersecurity standards such as NERC CIP, and help ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of Tacoma Public Utilities (TPU) systems.

This role requires strong technical and analytical skills, sound judgment, and effective communication to strengthen cybersecurity practices and support the resilience and reliability of critical utility operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Security Monitoring and Threat Detection: Administer and maintain SIEM dashboards, alerts, runbooks, and log integrations while monitoring security events and investigating anomalies using SIEM, EDR, and network security tools.
  • Threat Hunting and Investigation: Conduct proactive threat hunting to identify malicious activity, security misconfigurations, and indicators of compromise, supporting early detection and mitigation of potential threats.
  • Incident Response and Analysis: Participate in cybersecurity incident response activities, including triage, containment, remediation, documentation, and lessons learned, while coordinating with internal teams to validate events and gather forensic data.
  • EDR Platform Operations: Manage endpoint security agents, policies, tuning, and detections; review and escalate alerts and assist system owners with remediation efforts.
  • NERC CIP and Security Compliance Support: Perform assigned NERC CIP-related activities, including log reviews, evidence gathering, artifact maintenance, secure configuration validation, and compliance documentation and recordkeeping.
  • Vulnerability Management: Support vulnerability management activities, including scanning, ticketing, validation, and coordination with asset owners to facilitate remediation and risk reduction.
  • Security Risk and Control Support: Contribute to security exception reviews, control recommendations, and risk discussions to support effective cybersecurity practices and risk management.
  • Security Tools and Process Improvement: Assist with the onboarding and integration of security tools and identify opportunities for automation and operational improvements to strengthen cybersecurity capabilities.

Qualifications
Minimum Education*
Bachelor's degree in information technology, cybersecurity or directly related field

Minimum Experience*
2 years of progressively responsible information technology experience related to assignment

*Equivalency: 1 year of experience = 1 year of education

Licensing, Certifications and Other Requirements
As Assigned:
Washington State Driver's License

Depending on assignment, some positions may require the ability to pass additional background checks and/or obtain additional certifications, with maintenance thereafter

Preferred Qualifications:

Compensation & Benefits

Pay Details:

Annual Salary: $105,643.20 - $148,740.80

Medical Coverage: For eligible employees and their families, including domestic partners and dependent children age 26 or younger.

Dental Coverage: For eligible employees and their families, including domestic partners and dependent children age 26 or younger.

Vision Coverage: For eligible employees and their eligible dependents.

Paid Leave: City employees are entitled to received paid holidays, sick/vacation leave or personal time off (PTO), depending upon union affiliation and appointment type.

Insurance Plans: Employees are covered by a long-term disability plan. Short-term and expanded long-term disability insurance plans are also available to employees. The State Industrial Insurance Act also covers employees.

Deferred Compensation: Income can be set aside on a pretax basis and invested for supplementation of normal retirement income.

Retirement: All employees of the City, except members of the Police and Fire services, Tacoma Rail and certain project employees, are included in the Tacoma Employees' Retirement System. Other Employment Information

Direct Deposit: Employees are paid on a bi-weekly schedule by direct deposit.

Salary Increases: Based on satisfactory job performance, the City provides for a regular progression of salary increases for most classifications according to the salary schedule.

Union Affiliation: Many job classifications are covered by union security provisions which require union membership, dues, or payment of equivalent service fees.
