Overview

 

We are seeking a motivated Principal Technical Advisor in Aiken, SC. The Principal Technical Advisor provides senior-level technical leadership and strategic guidance on complex, high-impact issues affecting program operations, compliance, and organizational performance. This role serves as a subject matter expert in Nuclear Material Control and Accountability (NMC&A) and plays a key role in defining technical direction, resolving critical challenges, and supporting long-term program success. 

 

 

 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Technical Leadership & Problem Solving
  • Develop cost-effective technical solutions to complex and evolving program requirements
  • Lead investigations into technical issues and implement corrective actions
  • Apply advanced methods and emerging technologies to resolve operational challenges
  • Ensure compliance with DOE regulations, policies, and technical standards
Program & Strategic Support
  • Define scope and requirements for new and evolving technical programs
  • Develop strategic plans, goals, and performance milestones
  • Support major initiatives including process improvements, reengineering efforts, and organizational development
  • Provide technical input to authorization basis documents, procedures, and reports
Team Leadership & Collaboration
  • Lead multidisciplinary teams addressing complex, high-visibility projects
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders, external agencies (DOE-SR, DOE-HQ), and oversight bodies
  • Engage consultants and external experts as needed
  • Mentor and support development of technical staff, particularly in NMC&A
NMC&A Expertise
  • Serve as subject matter expert in Nuclear Material Control and Accountability
  • Ensure DOE NMC&A requirements are integrated into facility design and operations
  • Provide guidance, training support, and mentorship for NMC&A personnel
Communication & Representation
  • Represent the organization in technical matters with internal and external stakeholders
  • Prepare and manage technical correspondence
  • Support audits, reviews, and regulatory interactions
Operational Excellence & Safety
  • Promote continuous improvement initiatives aligned with mission objectives
  • Ensure strict adherence to safety protocols and foster a culture of safety
  • Exercise independent judgment and initiative in resolving complex issues

 

Education and Licensure
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, physical science, mathematics, statistics, or related field. (required)
  • Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD). (preferred)

 

Skills, Experience and Qualifications
  • Minimum 20 years of experience in Nuclear Material Control and Accountability (NMC&A) at a DOE/NNSA site. (required)
  • Extensive knowledge of:
    • DOE regulatory frameworks and Authorization Basis requirements
    • Nuclear operations, radiological systems, or plant operations
    • Program/project management and strategic planning
  • Demonstrated leadership in resolving complex technical and organizational challenges.
  • Advanced analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Strong leadership and team coordination skills.
  • Effective communication with technical and executive-level stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with technical, analytical, and administrative systems.
  • Due to federal contract security requirements, candidates must be able to successfully pass a federal background investigation to secure and maintain DOE Q security clearance. (required)
  • Preferred: Active clearance and existing DOE/NNSA facility clearance (eFOCI/FCL).
  • Standard 40-hour workweek (5/8s, 4/10s, or 9/80 schedule options).
  • Overtime may be required to meet project deadlines.
  • Travel requires prior approval and is limited to approved business needs only.
  • Maintain awareness of emerging technologies and industry trends. 
  • Provide input on program improvement initiatives.
  • Work independently with minimal direction while contributing to a team environment.
