Intermediate Mechanical Designer

Brampton, ON

In this role, you will be a part of the Oil and Gas & Chemical team, based in the Brampton office.

What a day at EXP has in store for you
  • Design work for process equipment including - pressure and non-pressure vessels, tanks, storage tanks, exchangers, towers, internals and ducting.
  • Develop detailed 3D and 2D models, general arrangement drawings, fabrication drawings, and bill of materials (BOMs) using SolidWorks, Inventor, AutoCAD, or similar CAD software.
  • Work includes conceptual studies, detailed design, field installation, and construction support in the oil, gas and petrochemical industries.
  • Interpret engineering specifications, customer requirements, and industry standards.
  • Fundamental knowledge of codes (ASME, ANSI, API, PIP, NACE, CSA etc.).
  • Support preparation of mechanical equipment calculations, specifications, datasheets, material quantity takeoffs, estimates, RFQ's, technical bid evaluations.
  • Coordinates with other engineering disciplines, suppliers, clients.
  • Review mechanical equipment vendor drawings and data.
  • Participate in the development of P&ID's and support project schedules.
  • Prepare construction specification, construction/installation scopes of work for mechanical equipment.
  • Collaborate with Mechanical Engineers to ensure designs meet performance, safety, and constructability requirements.
  • Excellent communication, problem solving, and analytical skills are required. Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task in support of multiple projects is essential.
  • Understand work planning and manage design process to the available hours in work plan.
  • Understand proper scope of SD, DD, CD level documents - and deliver appropriate documentation.
  • Work with Mechanical Leads, Project Managers and Clients to meet scheduled project milestones of multiple projects.
  • QA/QC reviews of all specifications, drawings, and by others.
  • Determine content of drawings and specs for Designers to meet the scope of work.
  • Develop and monitor work plans to support projects.
  • Review code related items with Designers and ensure compliance.
  • Manage work plans and deliverables on multiple projects within budgeted hours.
  • Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, and project meetings.
  • Participate and support shop inspections and site construction visit.
  • Maintain project documentation and engineering change records.


What your experience looks like
  • Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Design, or a related field from accredited college.
  • Minimum 5+ years of mechanical design experience in the oil & gas, petrochemical, energy or industrial equipment sector.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor, and equivalent CAD software (i.e. AutoCAD, Plant 3D, NavisWorks, etc.).
  • EPC experience preferred.
  • Experience creating fabrication and assembly drawings. Shop drawings and fabrication experience is an asset.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge of materials, welding, machining, and metal fabrication practices.
  • Willing to travel domestically and internationally as required
  • Good knowledge in mechanical engineering fundamentals, such as mechanics of material, welding, heat transfer, process, and instrumentation diagrams and etc.
