The Role
BGC is seeking an intermediate Geochemist or Hydrogeochemist to join our growing team. This role will focus on metal leaching (ML) and acid rock drainage (ARD) applications, water quality, seepage mitigation and management on mining, pipelines, and linear infrastructure projects across North America. Our projects span all phases of the typical project life cycle and often involve collaboration with dynamic, multi-disciplinary teams at BGC. The ideal candidate will have a strong academic background, relevant work experience, and a desire to travel and work in sometimes remote locations.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to projects that may include characterization of ML/ARD, water quality, site investigations, source term development and predictive water quality modelling projects
- Complete fieldwork including drilling, geological and geochemical logging, well and instrumentation installations, surface- and groundwater quality and flow monitoring.
- Lead or assist with project-specific tasks including review and management of datasets, development of figures and maps, and report writing.
- Supervise, train, and mentor junior staff in the field and office
- Promote BGC vision, values and culture amongst the team
Required Education, Experience & Competencies
- An undergraduate or graduate degree in geochemistry, geology, hydrogeology, geological engineering, or related discipline with a strong foundation in low-temperature geochemistry, ML/ARD and/or water quality.
- 5+ years of experience, which may include relevant summer jobs, co-ops terms, and/or internships.
- Registered Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Geoscientist-in-Training (GIT) with EGBC or similar association in Canada or the US.
- Excited to undertake fieldwork, sometimes at remote project locations.
- Self-starter with a keen desire to contribute to technical excellence in a "One Team" environment.
- Excellent communication skills in English, both written and oral, and the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Desired Experience & Competencies
- Experience using water quality and geochemical data to develop monitoring plans and/or water quality models.
- Experience with mentoring, teaching or leading teams of junior/intermediate team members.
- Able to work efficiently with large datasets using database management programs such as EQWIN or EQuIS, Microsoft Access
- Familiar with geochemical and hydrological modeling platforms including PHREEQC, Geochemists Workbench, HYDRUS, MIN3P, MODFLOW and/or GoldSim
- Experience with general-purpose scripting/programming (Python, VBA, C++, Fortran, etc.) is an asset.
- French or Spanish language proficiency is an asset.
Position Requirements
Drug & Alcohol Testing

This testing could be requested within an employee's first week or in the future, as required. Driver's License
BGC requires that employees have a valid driver's license, and that employees can drive a field pickup truck. Upon hiring, BGC will require a driver's abstract to allow for a safety review of your driving history.

Compensation
The estimated base salary range for this position is $115,000-$180,000 CAD per annum, however base pay will be commensurate with job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. BGC's compensation package also includes a discretionary bonus plan, training allowance, and comprehensive medical and dental plan.
