Description

Magna IV Engineering is seeking a highly experienced Intermediate Design Engineer to join our Langley, BC Engineering team. This role provides technical leadership and advanced electrical design expertise for projects in the heavy industrial, petrochemical, utilities, oil & gas, and manufacturing sectors. Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Electrical Design Engineer is responsible for leading electrical design activities, mentoring junior engineers, ensuring technical quality, and delivering safe, compliant, and cost-effective engineering solutions that exceed client expectations.

This position is primarily based at our Langley corporate office with approximately 15% business travel as required.

Technical Leadership & Design
  • Lead and execute detailed electrical engineering design for industrial power systems, including protection, control, and electrical apparatus
  • Develop and review engineering deliverables such as:
    • Design Basis Memoranda
    • Engineering Design Specifications
    • Single-line diagrams, protection & control schematics, wiring diagrams, and layouts
    • Construction Work Packages and IFC drawings
  • Perform and review power system studies using tools such as ETAP (load flow, short circuit, arc flash, coordination)
  • Prepare procurement specifications for electrical equipment including switchgear, MCCs, VFDs, transformers, and protection relays
  • Conduct technical bid evaluations and provide purchase recommendations


Project Execution & Quality
  • Provide technical oversight throughout project execution, ensuring compliance with codes, standards, and client requirements
  • Conduct QA/QC reviews of engineering deliverables produced by project teams
  • Support construction, commissioning, and field troubleshooting activities as required
  • Coordinate electrical inspections and interface with regulatory authorities


Client & Stakeholder Engagement
  • Serve as a technical point of contact for clients, vendors, and project stakeholders
  • Participate in client meetings, design reviews, and technical workshops
  • Develop proposals, estimates, and technical scopes in response to client requests
  • Provide regular project status updates to Project Managers and Engineering Leadership


Mentorship & Collaboration
  • Mentor and support Engineers-in-Training
  • Promote best practices, technical consistency, and continuous improvement across the engineering team
  • Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams including mechanical, civil, instrumentation, and process engineering


Safety & Compliance
  • Ensure all designs adhere to applicable codes and standards, including the Canadian Electrical Code
  • Promote a strong safety culture and ensure safe work practices in office and field environments
  • Work safely around low-, medium-, and high-voltage electrical systems


Requirements

Education & Certification
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in good standing with APEGA (or eligible for registration in British Columbia)


Experience
  • Minimum 8-12 years of progressive electrical engineering experience, preferably in industrial or petrochemical environments
  • Proven experience leading electrical design for complex, multidisciplinary projects


Technical Expertise
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • MV and LV power distribution systems
    • Protection and control systems
    • Electrical equipment including switchgear, MCCs, VFDs, transformers, and protection relays
    • The Canadian Electrical Code, NFPA, IEEE, and various other applicable standards
  • Proficiency with electrical design and analysis tools such as:
    • ETAP
    • AutoCAD, MicroStation, or SmartPlant
  • Experience with P&IDs, loop diagrams, single-line diagrams, and instrument data sheets

  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and flexible schedules, including overtime and travel.
  • Ability to wear required PPE, including hard hats, safety glasses, face shields, hearing protection, flame-resistant and arc-flash-rated clothing, high-visibility apparel, protective footwear, insulated gloves, and respiratory protection as required.
  • Ability to safely perform job duties while wearing PPE.
