Full Job Description
Interior Designer

This position provides interior design and planning services for improvements to existing BYU facilities, helping create functional, welcoming spaces that support the university's mission and the people who use them. Depending on experience, the position may also serve as the Owner's Representative on new construction and major renovation projects, working closely with outside architects and design consultants.

The role offers a diverse mix of creative design, project coordination, and client collaboration. Responsibilities include meeting with clients and consultants, conducting space and design studies, developing preliminary plans and working drawings, preparing cost estimates and project documentation, reviewing specifications and shop drawings, assisting with project inspections, and monitoring project budgets. The position also helps shape campus-wide interior standards and finishes, including color palettes, flooring, paint, upholstery, window coverings, and wall coverings. Success in this role requires strong design skills, attention to detail, sound project management, and the ability to communicate effectively with clients, consultants, and campus partners.

What you'll do in this position:

  • Keep up to date on all building codes and ensure that all projects conform to these codes.
  • Resolve time delays in delivery and installation of furnishings and accept responsibility for incorrectly shipped merchandise, damaged furniture, and verify inaccurate billings.
  • Verify inaccurate billings, handle mis-shipped merchandise, and solve problems that arise during installations.
  • Consult with project requestors to determine the proper selection of finishes.
  • Plan and prepare drawings and specifications for shop and contract projects.
  • Help develop and manage project budgets and ensure efficient use of space and budgets.
  • Depending on experience, serve as the Owner's Representative on new construction and major renovation projects involving outside architects, interior designers, and other design consultants.
  • Visit projects on a regular basis to ensure compliance with plans, specifications and project requirements.
  • Assist shop personnel, construction project managers, architects, and contractors in solving problems that develop during construction. Attend progress and final inspections and assist in preparation of punch lists.

What qualifies you for this role:

Required
  • A firm commitment to the mission of BYU.
  • Bachelor's degree in any field and 4 year's Interior Design Experience, or,• Associate's or bachelor's degree in Interior Design and 2 year's Interior Design Experience.
  • Working knowledge of construction documents.
  • Specific knowledge of systems furniture specifications and other furnishings and finish specifications.
  • Administrative abilities to work with large budgets that fall into given requirements.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of finishes and their appropriate applications.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, REVIT and CET.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Skills to communicate effectively orally and in writing

Preferred
  • Associate's or bachelor's degree in interior design and 5 years' interior design experience.
  • Commercial Interior Design experience. NCIDQ certification.

Typical Starting Pay: $75,000 to $109,000

The actual compensation offered will take into consideration internal equity and may vary based on the candidate's job-related experience, knowledge, skills, and other relevant factors. Candidates with very significant work-related experience may receive an offer higher than the posted typical range.
