Job Summary
The Interdisciplinary Team Lead / Project Manager leads and coordinates environmental compliance projects, managing scope, schedule, and interdisciplinary teams in support of U.S. Forest Service initiatives. This role oversees NEPA documentation and ensures all deliverables are compliant, technically sound, and aligned with federal regulations while serving as the primary liaison to stakeholders., and support successful project execution across multiple concurrent efforts.

Duty Station: Asheville, NC (Hybrid, 2 days minimum onsite)
Travel: Travel up to 75% (Travel required throughout the National Forests in North Carolina)
Duties/Responsibilities
- Lead and manage interdisciplinary teams supporting environmental compliance and natural resource projects
- Plan, organize, and oversee multiple projects to ensure delivery on schedule, within budget, and to required quality standards
- Serve as primary liaison to Forest Service personnel, providing regular updates, issue resolution, and strategic guidance
- Coordinate and integrate technical input from specialists (e.g., biology, hydrology, forestry, cultural resources) into unified project deliverables
- Oversee preparation of NEPA documentation, including Environmental Assessments (EA), Environmental Impact Statements (EIS), and decision documents
- Ensure compliance with federal environmental laws and regulations (NEPA, ESA, NHPA, CWA, and related policies)
- Develop and maintain project schedules, milestones, budgets, and performance tracking systems
- Facilitate interdisciplinary team meetings and stakeholder coordination to ensure alignment and progress
- Provide technical and analytical guidance to support environmental planning, analysis, and decision-making
- Review and ensure quality, accuracy, and legal defensibility of all project deliverables and reports
- Manage project documentation and maintain complete administrative records in accordance with agency requirements
- Identify project risks and issues, recommend solutions, and implement corrective actions as needed
- Support development of project strategies, alternatives analysis, and mitigation measures
- Ensure all deliverables meet Forest Service standards, templates, and reporting requirements

Required Skills/Abilities
- Required: Expertise in NEPA processes and environmental compliance documentation (EA, EIS, CE, decision documents)
- Required: Ability to lead interdisciplinary teams and manage multiple projects (scope, schedule, cost, performance)
- Required: Strong knowledge of federal environmental laws (ESA, NHPA, CWA) and regulatory compliance
- Required: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including technical reporting and stakeholder coordination
- Preferred: Experience leading or managing multiple Environmental Assessments (EAs) or Environmental Impact Statements (EISs)
- Preferred: Prior experience with U.S. Forest Service or other federal land management agencies
- Preferred: Advanced knowledge of ecosystem management and integrated resource planning
- Preferred: Experience integrating multi-disciplinary inputs (wildlife, hydrology, botany, forestry, cultural resources) into unified deliverables
Education and Experience
- Required: Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Natural Resources, Forestry, Biology, Environmental Planning, or a related field
- Required: Minimum of 5-7 years of project management experience in environmental compliance, natural resources, or related field
- Required: Demonstrated experience managing or supporting NEPA documentation, including Environmental Assessments (EA) or Environmental Impact Statements (EIS)
- Required: Experience leading or coordinating interdisciplinary teams on complex projects
- Preferred: Advanced degree (Master's) in environmental, natural resource, or related discipline
- Preferred: Experience working with U.S. Forest Service or other federal land management agencies
- Preferred: Demonstrated experience managing multiple environmental compliance projects simultaneously
- Preferred: Professional certification such as Project Management Professional (PMP) or similar credential
Physical Requirements
- Ability to navigate and work in field environments during site visits, including uneven terrain, forested areas, and remote locations
- Ability to stand, walk, and travel for extended periods during field inspections or project activities
- Sufficient vision and hearing to read technical documents, use computer systems, and communicate in person or via phone/radio
- Ability to travel frequently to project sites and attend in-person meetings as required
- Ability to work in environments with exposure to weather, noise, dust, and outdoor conditions during occasional field visits
- May occasionally lift and carry items up to 25 lbs
