The Opportunity

We are seeking an Integrated Design Project Engineer for our new Integrated Services Team• a group of engineers dedicated to supporting construction-driven projects with high-quality, technically sound design services. This role focuses on executing and leading the technical production of projects, ensuring accuracy, constructability, and efficiency, while working closely with internal design staff and KL&A's construction managers.

The Integrated Services Team supports steel fabricators, steel detailers, timber providers, building system developers, and general contractors with timely, cost-effective solutions. By separating architecturally driven and construction-driven projects into distinct team structures, we improve delivery, reduce disruptions, and expand opportunities for engineers to gain expertise in design/build practices.

Project Engineer Responsibilities
  • Serve as the day-to-day technical lead for construction-focused design projects.
  • Perform structural analysis, design, and documentation for steel, timber, and hybrid structural systems.
  • Oversee and coordinate drawing production, ensuring quality, constructability, and efficiency.
  • Delegate technical tasks to Design Engineers, provide mentorship, and perform first-level quality control.
  • Work closely with Project Managers to align design strategies with budgets, schedules, and project goals.
  • Coordinate internally with construction managers and steel detailers to ensure smooth integration of design and construction workflows.
  • Identify and solve technical challenges proactively, providing practical solutions for construction-driven projects.
  • Support client coordination when needed, under the direction of the Project Manager.

Example Projects
  • Structural design support for steel and mass timber construction projects.
  • Delegated design of stairs, rails, rooftop unit frames, mass timber components, and other building systems.
  • Pedestrian bridge design for detailing partners.
  • Gap-scope design tasks that support both construction and architecturally driven projects.

Qualifications
  • ABET-accredited degree in Structural or Architectural Engineering.
  • Engineer Intern (EI/EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) licensure (or ability to obtain).
  • Minimum 4 years of structural design experience, ideally including construction-driven or delegated design projects.
  • Strong knowledge of steel and timber design principles.
  • Eligibility to work in the US without sponsorship, both presently and in the future.

Bonus Qualifications:
  • Proficiency in Revit Structures.
  • Experience with RAM and/or RISA analysis models.
  • Background in design-build or delegated design projects.

Salary: $90,000 • $110,000 annually
