Department: Maintenance

Job Title: Instrumentation/Controls Technician

Work Schedule: 5 days a week; 6:30 am - 3:30 pm

Overtime, weekends, and other shifts as required. Subject to Callouts.

Full or Part Time: Full-time only

Pay Range: $37 - $42/ hour (Depending on Experience)

JOB SUMMARY:

Instrumentation Technician will support plant reliability through the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, calibration, and repair of industrial instrumentation, automation, electrical, networking, and control systems used in gypsum wallboard manufacturing operations. This role works closely with plant operations, maintenance personnel, and corporate IT to support production efficiency, equipment reliability, and safe plant operations in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma or GED required; technical training or industrial electrical/instrumentation education or 3+ years of relevant experience preferred.
  • Experience in troubleshooting and maintaining industrial electrical, instrumentation, automation, or control systems.
  • Experience troubleshooting Allen-Bradley PLCs and HMI/MMI systems preferred.
  • RSLogix experience is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of industrial instrumentation, electrical systems, VFDs, and process controls.
  • Experience with calibration and troubleshooting of pressure transducers, temperature devices, instrumentation devices, and 4-20mA loops.
  • Experience installing and troubleshooting Fiber Optics, RJ45 network cables, CAT5/CAT6 Ethernet systems, and industrial networking equipment.
  • Ability to read and complete electrical drawings and sketches.
  • Experience in troubleshooting industrial networking systems and switch configuration is a plus.
  • Strong computer skills and experience using maintenance ERP/work order systems, such as Oracle, preferred.
  • Experience in troubleshooting and maintaining specialized production systems, including lasers, moisture sensors, profiling systems, and related automation equipment, is a plus.
  • Ability to organize and complete electrical and instrumentation projects with minimal supervision.
  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work safely around high-voltage electrical systems, moving machinery, elevated work areas, and industrial equipment.
  • Must be able to comply with all plant safety rules and NFPA 70E electrical standards.
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends, other shifts, and respond to call-outs as needed.
  • Must be able to work in a physically demanding industrial environment.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Troubleshoot, maintain, configure, and support Allen Bradley PLCs, RSLogix software, and HMI/MMI systems.
  • Calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot plant instrumentation systems, including pressure transducers, temperature devices, lasers, moisture sensors, and other specialized production equipment.
  • Install, maintain, and troubleshoot industrial networking systems, Fiber Optics, RJ45 network cables, CAT5/CAT6 Ethernet cables, and switch configurations.
  • Program, troubleshoot, configure, and support VFDs used in industrial applications.
  • Install, maintain, and troubleshoot camera systems, phone systems, plant software systems, and related technology infrastructure.
  • Complete electrical drawings and sketches and support electrical and instrumentation projects from design through completion.
  • Develop, update, and perform preventative maintenance programs for instrumentation and automation systems.
  • Utilize Oracle systems for work orders, maintenance tracking, purchase requests, and documentation.
  • Work closely with corporate IT and plant personnel to support plant networking, automation, and communication systems.
  • Mentor and support coworkers in troubleshooting electrical and instrumentation systems.
  • Maintain housekeeping standards and participate in plant safety programs, safety meetings, and safety improvement initiatives.
  • Assist other departments and support operational needs as required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND CONDITIONS:
  • Typically well-lit industrial manufacturing environment.
  • Plant is not heated or air-conditioned, and temperatures may vary.
  • Moderate to high noise levels require hearing protection.
  • PPE required on site, including hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, and steel-toe boots.
  • Work may involve exposure to moving machinery, high-voltage electrical systems, dust, elevated work areas, and mobile equipment.
  • Air quality is generally good.
