Full Job Description

The Instrument Engineer is responsible for the design, reliability, maintenance, and continuous improvement of instrumentation, control systems, and safety instrumented systems (SIS) within a chemical manufacturing environment. This role partners closely with Operations, Maintenance, Process Safety, and Capital Projects teams to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient plant performance while maintaining compliance with applicable regulations and industry standards.

Essential Functions

  • Instrumentation & Controls
    *Provide technical expertise for instrumentation, analyzers, control valves, PLCs, DCS systems, and field devices.
    *Develop and maintain instrument specifications, datasheets, and engineering standards.
    *Support installation, commissioning, calibration, and troubleshooting of instrumentation systems.
    *Review and update P&IDs, loop drawings, interlock diagrams, and control narratives.
  • Process Safety & Compliance
    *Lead efforts related to Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS), Safety Integrity Levels (SIL), and Safety Instrumented Functions (SIF).
    *Support PHA, LOPA, MOC, incident investigations, and action item closure.
    *Ensure compliance with OSHA PSM, IEC 61511, and company standards.
    Identify and address instrumentation-related safety and reliability risks.
  • Reliability & Continuous Improvement
    *Investigate instrumentation failures and implement corrective actions.
    *Improve alarm management, interlocks, and control system performance.
    *Support plant reliability initiatives and asset lifecycle management.
    *Develop preventive and predictive maintenance strategies for instrumentation assets.
  • Projects & Engineering Support
    *Support capital and expense projects from concept through startup.
    *Provide instrument design, equipment selection, vendor coordination, and technical reviews.
    *Develop project scopes, cost estimates, and technical specifications.
    *Coordinate contractors and external engineering resources as needed.
  • Leadership & Collaboration
    *Serve as the technical focal point for instrumentation and controls.
    *Mentor I&E technicians and provide technical training.
    *Coordinate activities with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, and Process Safety teams.
    *Support plant turnarounds, outages, and startup activities.
  • Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned, including but not limited to continuously growing in alignment with the Company’s core values, competencies, and skills.


Education Qualifications

  • Required Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Chemical Engineering or related engineering discipline.

Work Experience

  • 5+ years of instrumentation, controls, or automation engineering experience in chemical, petrochemical, refining or process manufacturing industries.


Skills and Abilities

  • Instrumentation knowledge and design experience required
  • Experience with SIS, SIL, SIF and functional safety programs required
  • Knowledge of alarms, interlocks and safety systems required
  • Experience with PLC and DCS systems required
  • Experience supporting plant operations and maintenance activities required


Working Conditions/Physical Demands

  • Walking. Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long periods of time, up to 12 hours per day.
  • Sitting. Working from a seated position for up to 12 hours per day.
  • Climbing. Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, ramps and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms one to two times per day.
  • Balancing. Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling and walking, standing or crouching on narrow or slippery surfaces.
  • Stooping. Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.
  • Kneeling. Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
  • Crouching. Bending the body downward and forward by bending legs and spine.
  • Reaching. Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Pushing. Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force, exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 15 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force consistently to move objects forward, downward or outward.
  • Pulling. Using upper extremities to exert up to 25 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 15 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force consistently to draw, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
  • Lifting. Raising objects up to 25 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 15 pounds frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds consistently from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position.
  • Grasping. Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
  • Possible subject to environmental conditions. Activities could occur inside and outside.
  • Subject to extreme heat. Temperatures above 100 for periods of more than one hour.
  • Subject to vibration. Exposure to movements of the extremities or whole body. Operate/drive utility vehicle.
  • Subject to hazards. Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals.
  • Must be able to wear appropriate PPE for tasks as required. FRC uniform, hard hat, safety toe work boots, safety glasses, gloves etc.
