Job Description

The Clinical Informatics Pharmacist (CIP) position requires detailed knowledge and understanding of the Medication Use Process (MUP) across the continuum in order to leverage current technology and identify need for additional/newer technology. This knowledge and understanding is gained by working various shifts in the pharmacy. The CIP oversees and manages the execution of information systems full-life cycle activities for pharmacy and medication-use projects and initiatives. The CIP provides resource expertise for planning and/or managing additional information technology projects that may impact pharmacy services. The CIP works in concert with TS personnel to ensure project and routine workflow timelines are met.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, build, implement and maintain pharmacy and pharmacy related applications as well as user databases.
  • Works in concert with Technology Services and other clinical areas to provide pharmacy process related information potentially impacted by non-pharmacy led application activities/ changes to ensure patient safety as it relates to the Medication Use Process (MUP).
  • Represents pharmacy on hospital and organizational initiative committees to facilitate project completion and where participation will serve to benefit goals/outcomes.
  • Works diligently to keep pharmacy applications and EMR in sync to ensure accuracy of reports generated to support initiatives as identified by pharmacy and/or organization.
  • Other duties as assigned

Education
  • Bachelor's Degree - Pharmacy - Required
  • PharmD from an ACPE accredited college of Pharmacy - Required

Work Experience
  • 5 Years - Hospital pharmacy experience - Preferred
  • Project Management skills - Preferred
  • Working knowledge of hospital pharmacy automation and applications preferred. - Preferred

Licenses and Certifications
  • Registered Pharmacist (RPh) - State of Missouri - Required Upon Hire
  • 30 hours continuing education every 2 years for license renewal. - Required Upon Hire

Travel Requirements
  • Must be able to travel between various system facilities and off-site locations as needed. - Required

  • Ability to hypothesize, understand and apply technology to enhance MUP.
  • Able to speak clearly in order to communicate with ancillary medical professionals regarding technology as part of MUP.
  • Able to answer the telephone in order to take and receive and relay, interpret, analyze questions follow-up.


Interpersonal Skills
  • Ability to communicate, clearly, handle telephone, take and deliver messages and interact with other health care practitioners for the benefit of providing quality patient care.
  • Able to function as a team player.
  • Able to problem solve through individual and group interaction dealing with others in order to meet the needs and expectations of the customer.
  • Able to be flexible with personal schedule to meet department staffing requirements.


Essential Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift and push varying degrees of weight (not to exceed 50 pounds).
  • Ability to constantly move in/out of department, standing, sitting, walking to fill orders, retrieve medications, deliver, answer phones (several), trips to and from the nursing units, writing orders, doing patient consults, providing drug information; to be able to operate, understand and functionally perform the computer operation as and other pharmacy equipment/devices.

  • Able to manipulate numbers and interchange from metric/apothecary measures, and handle dosage calculations.
  • Able to read, interpret data/analyze written medication order and converse with physicians on suggested/recommended therapy adjustments/changes etc. toward a positive outcome.
  • Able to calculate, manipulate and state correct dosages/adjustments.
  • Able to assimilate, comprehend, understand physician orders/requests and understand written/verbal requests
  • Able to approach redesign and implementation of technology by applying detailed stepwise methodology to ensure safest processes.
  • Ability to multi-task without losing focus.
  • Able to adapt to priority requests and changing healthcare environment through the use of organizational skills.
  • Able to use short and long-term memory in order to relate various components of project management.
  • Alert and focus on task/activity and not become overwhelmed when managing to short project timelines.


Essential Sensory Requirements
  • Able to visually assess EMR, reports, audits to make informed decisions, etc. for further processing.
  • Able to hear in order to handle phone requests from staff, ancillary medical personnel, physicians regarding pharmacy applications, both to send and receive.
  • Able to visually assess colors in order to input application data and as visual cues.


Exposure to Hazards
  • Electrical, hazardous drugs, chemotherapy, needle sticks.

  • Self-starter does not require much supervision.
