Job Summary and Qualifications

The Infection Preventionist is responsible for the prevention, detection and control of infections in the facility and responsible for the direction of the infection prevention program. The individual is responsible for establishing, instituting and maintaining an effective system for evaluation and reporting infections in patients. All of this shall be accomplished based on a systematic body of professional knowledge. Assumes responsibility for the management of facility surveillance, prevention, and control of infection. Collaborates with other departments to ensure that optimal infection control practices are delineated, shared, maintained, and regularly reviewed. Maintains current knowledge of job related research findings and initiates or modifies policy, procedure, and practice in accordance with these. The Infection Preventionist collaborates with the Employee Health Nurse in the clinical review, evaluation and implementation of the facility wide Employee Health program. Interacts positively and professionally with patients, families, peers, physicians, other hospital departments, administration, and the general public. Reviews and assures compliance with all applicable regulatory, certification and accreditation standards. Monitors all publically reported and corporate defined and reported infection prevention data. Under the supervision of the Infection Prevention Manager, the Infection Preventionist conducts surveillance and reports data to NHSN, and contributes to the communication of infection prevention data to the organization. Works in collaboration with Safety Officer to monitor and direct infection prevention practices for construction and other hospital projects. Actively participates in professional organizations. When need arises, will perform other duties as assigned by Manager of Infection Prevention.

What qualifications you will need:
  • Current Certification in Infection Prevention and Control preferred. Must obtain within six months of eligibility as defined by the Certified Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology (CBIC)
  • Current registration or license with experience in the state of Colorado as a registered nurse, medical technologist, or clinical laboratory scientist preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in related field. Degree in Nursing or other clinical related field, preferred MSN, MPH or other related Master's degree preferred.
  • 2 - 4 years' experience in a hospital setting required. Three (3) years of infection prevention and control experience preferred. Knowledge in hospital epidemiology principles, infectious diseases, and sterilization, sanitation, and disinfection practices required.
  • Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Knowledge of principles, practices, procedures and patient safety principles in infection control and prevention in the patient care environment required.
  • Able to teach subject matter to others, or train others through explanation, demonstration, and supervised practice or make recommendations on the basis of technical disciplines.
  • Excellent organization and customer service skills.
  • Ability to successfully handle multiple priorities and prioritize and schedule accordingly.
  • Must be able to successfully and effectively communicate with a variety of personnel, patients and physicians.
  • Team-building, conflict resolution, and communication skills, both verbal and written required.
  • Work collaboratively with other departments and physicians.
  • Ability to develop facility educational and research policies and programs, quality improvement programs, and operational policies and procedures.
