Position Overview

Calian is seeking an Infection Prevention and Control Nurse to add to our clinical team working at CFB Esquimalt in Victoria, BC. This is a full time opportunity. Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) Nurses play a vital role in ensuring safe, high-quality care for both patients and staff within Canadian Forces Health Services Centres (CF H Svcs C). As key members of the CAF primary healthcare team, they contribute directly to the effectiveness of the national IPAC program.

In this unique role, IPAC Nurses work across community and primary care settings, providing expert guidance and hands-on support to prevent and control infections in CAF clinics and surrounding facilities. Their work includes monitoring and surveillance, implementing evidence-based prevention strategies, and advising healthcare teams to maintain the highest standards of safety and readiness.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver CFHS IPAC programs tailored to local needs, including acting as a back up immunizer after completing required certification.
  • Identify infectious disease processes and support clinical teams in differentiating colonization, infection, contamination, and antimicrobial use.
  • Lead local surveillance activities-conduct risk assessments, implement epidemiologic investigations, and create systems to flag communicable diseases.
  • Collect, track, and analyze infection data, including incidence, prevalence, and infection rates.
  • Participate in outbreak investigations and help implement effective control measures.
  • Prevent and control infection transmission by applying CFHS policies and collaborating with base/wing units and community partners.
  • Provide annual IPAC training to clinic staff on routine practices, PPE use, hand hygiene, and biomedical waste management.
  • Conduct annual hand hygiene and housekeeping audits per CFHS standards.
  • Develop, update, and maintain local IPAC Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Identify and resolve local infection control issues through early detection, investigation, contact tracing, and preventative measures.
  • Create and distribute patient and staff education materials (sessions, posters, signage).
  • Recommend environmental cleaning and disinfection requirements.
  • Support national IPAC alignment by participating in workshops, training, and communication forums.
  • Monitor regional infection trends, investigate suspected outbreaks, and analyze data such as surgical site infection rates.
  • Coordinate N95 fit-testing sessions and produce annual status reports.
  • Guide and support sterilization processing staff and maintain related records.
  • Complete the clinic's accreditation IPAC self assessment when required.
  • Provide IPAC input for pandemic planning and report outbreaks to leadership.
  • Advise on infection control measures for construction, renovations, and facility changes.
  • Collaborate with OHS and Preventive Medicine teams on post exposure protocols and staff safety strategies.
  • Perform other related duties within the IPAC scope as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BN, BScN, or BNSc) from a recognized university.
  • Active, unrestricted RN license with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
  • Certification in Infection Control (CIC) or certification in Community Health Nursing or Public Health Nursing.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers (or CPR/AED Level C equivalent), with annual recertification required.
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience in a clinical health-care setting, plus one of the following IPAC pathways:
  • Applied knowledge of antimicrobials, infectious disease processes, surveillance, and epidemiologic investigation.
  • Ability to implement infection transmission prevention measures aligned with provincial standards (BCCDC, PHSA, CSA).
  • Practical experience with public health measures, occupational health considerations, environmental cleaning, sterilization, disinfection, asepsis, and communicable disease management.
  • Experience delivering patient and staff education; familiarity with adult education principles is considered an asset.
  • Work experience in Public Health, Community Health, Communicable Disease Control, Primary Care, or Occupational Health settings

Additional Requirements

  • You will be able to obtain a Government Security Clearance at the Reliability level.

Compensation

$65 - $70 hourly
