Full Job Description
**This position is fully remote and can be based anywhere in the U.S.**

Essential Functions:

Collaborates with people leader to execute company underwriting framework within assigned industry segment:
  • Collaborates with people leader in implementing the short and long-term strategic product and underwriting strategies within assigned industry segment in support of enterprise-wide business and profitability goals
  • Creates and communicates best practices and underwriting guidance to the company
  • Serves as a technical expert in Corporate Underwriting on responses to questions on assigned business segment
  • Assists in the development and maintenance of the business plan for assigned industry segment
  • Analyzes premium and loss data and other key reports on monthly and quarterly basis to ensure long-term profitable growth
  • Proactively communicates and makes necessary recommendations to people leader for improvement needed to meet company goals and improve underwriting results.
  • Recommends and develops new product ideas, reviews existing products, and assists with drafting new coverage language
  • Evaluates the cost and benefit of market opportunities and product initiatives and recommends actions based on evaluation, including identifying product improvements
  • Participates in on-going collaboration with risk improvement, claims, actuary and other appropriate teams in support of enterprise wise business and profitability goals


Acts as a strategic partner for regions and offers guidance on complex underwriting matters within assigned industry segment:
  • Evaluates underwriting risks and provides analysis and guidance to all regional underwriting teams in determining the acceptability of business. Reviews and studies proposed changes in rules, rates, and forms for assigned industry segment
  • Assesses coverage, limits, and pricing on accounts and provides regions with authorizations on accounts above branch authority
  • Participates in all aspects of quality control and audit assessments on new and renewal business


Participates in the identification, preparation and presentation of underwriting training opportunities and programs at the region and enterprise level:
  • Partners with and provides underwriting expertise to departments within the company, including organizing and assisting in preparation and teaching of underwriting workshops and seminars for underwriting staff
  • Provides direction, training, and guidance for less experienced team members as appropriate for areas of expertise
  • Acts as a speaker or instructor for internal training exercises or meetings, and provides input or prepares articles, white papers, and underwriting bulletins on complex issues
  • Reviews insurance publications and keeps current on issues by attending seminars and participating in formalized continuing education
  • Participates in the creation and execution of marketing material and strategies
  • Represents Corporate Underwriting and EMC on various committees and events as appropriate and approved


Performs special projects for assigned industry segments:
  • Serves on special projects with other strategic partners within the organization as a representative of assigned industry segment
  • Provides evaluation and input regarding effectiveness of departmental programs and projects


Education & Experience:

Industry Segment Consultant:
  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in a business or insurance related field, or equivalent relevant experience
  • Eight years of experience with commercial property and casualty underwriting experience
  • Staff underwriting experience within assigned line of business or business segment preferred
  • Insurance designations, such as AU, CIC, or CPCU preferred

Candidates that exceed the minimum qualifications may be considered for a higher level position.

Industry Segment Manager:
  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in a business or insurance related field, or equivalent relevant experience
  • Ten years of commercial property and casualty underwriting including at least three years of staff underwriting experience in applicable industry segment
  • Insurance designations, such as AU, CIC, or CPCU preferred


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Excellent knowledge of countrywide underwriting techniques, terminology, policies, and forms
  • Strong underwriting judgment and decision-making skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to speak effectively before groups
  • Ability to work effectively with others, as well as independently and possess demonstrated problem-solving abilities
  • Good computer knowledge, Internet and keyboarding skills
  • Occasional travel; a valid driver's license with an acceptable motor vehicle report per company standards required if driving


The hiring salary range for this position will vary based on geographic location, falling within either of the following:
$100,085 - $138,285 or $110,624 - $152,122
A hiring range represents a subset of the full salary range. The actual salary will depend on several factors, including relevant education, skills, and experience of an applicant, geographic location, and business needs.
