Job Description Summary

The Industrial Hygienist B reports to an Industrial Hygienist - C or designated manager, and is responsible for ensuring compliance with appropriate laws and regulations governing health and safety in the work place and in schools. This position is for the QA/QC (Off-Hours) Unit..

Job Description

Responsibilities include:

  • Conducts initial review of all construction documents to ensure compliance with appropriate provisions related to environmental conditions before they are sent for final approval.
  • Coordinates all phases of environmental projects assigned.
  • Coordinates all administrative project aspects relevant to Environmental conditions for all projects assigned.
  • Monitors job sites to determine the presence of occupational health hazards and ensures that industrial hygiene standards are maintained and appropriate safety provisions are observed.
  • Prepares special reports requested by supervisors.
  • Recommends appropriate equipment and techniques for protection against exposure to harmful substances and hazardous conditions or operations.
  • Educates/trains project stakeholders regarding matters of industrial hygiene.


Additional Tasks:

  • Performs primarily field-based QA/QC oversight of IEH projects at active construction and remediation sites.
  • Conducts scheduled and unannounced site inspections during evenings, nights, weekends, school breaks, and other off-hours, as required by project activities.
  • Verifies that contractors, consultants, and project stakeholders comply with applicable IEH specifications, regulatory requirements, permits, variances, and approved work plans.
  • Documents field observations, identifies deficiencies, communicates required corrective actions, and follows up to confirm timely resolution.
  • Reviews inspection reports, sampling documentation, laboratory results, and closeout records for completeness, accuracy, and consistency with project requirements.
  • Escalates significant compliance concerns and coordinates with project staff to protect building occupants, workers, and the public.
  • Prepares QA/QC summaries, special reports, and recommendations for preventative and corrective action.
  • Educates/trains project stakeholders regarding matters of industrial hygiene.
  • Performs related tasks.


May perform the duties of Industrial Hygienist - A:

  • Collects samples of potentially hazardous materials for analysis.
  • Coordinates asbestos abatement activities on construction projects.
  • Assists in review of construction documents to assure appropriate provisions relating to industrial hygiene with emphasis on the handling of asbestos.
  • Prepares reports recommending both preventative and corrective action with respect to industrial hygiene, as well as providing technical guidance, as required.
  • Performs related tasks.


Minimum Requirements:

  • Three years of experience performing hazard/toxic substance assessments, or a satisfactory combination of education and experience.
  • Baccalaureate Degree in related field or a satisfactory combination of education and experience.

Civil Service Classification: Competitive

Salary:
  • Appointment Rate: $79,407 - $110,686
  • Incumbent Rate: $91,318 - $127,289


Subject to the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, the appointment rate for any newly hired employee, or employees with less than two years of active City or SCA service, shall be 15% less than the applicable incumbent rate or step.

Work Experience

Three years of full time experience performing hazard/toxic substance assessments, or a satisfactory combination of education and experience. Selective Certification for Specialty Experience. Specialty areas are: Survey & Design: must have a minimum of three years of experience specializing in survey & design. Field Operations: must have a minimum of three years of experience specializing in field operations. Hazmat: must have a minimum of three years of experience specializing in Hazmat.
