Johnson & Johnson is recruiting for an Industrial Engineer located in Santa Clara, CA
Position Summary
The Industrial Engineer will support manufacturing systems, process improvement, capacity planning, and layout design initiatives across New Product Introduction (NPI) and sustaining operations for electro-mechanical and robotic medical device assembly. Working closely with Manufacturing, Design, Quality, Supply Chain, and Supplier teams, this role will help develop and implement efficient, compliant, and scalable production systems.
The Industrial Engineer will apply industrial engineering principles, Lean methodologies, and data-driven analysis to improve productivity, quality, and operational performance while supporting compliance with applicable medical device regulations and quality system requirements.
In This Role You Will
- Support industrial engineering activities for NPI and sustaining product lines, including process development, line layout, work cell design, and production flow analysis.
- Perform takt time, cycle time, capacity, and staffing analyses to support production volume and operational goals.
- Assist in the development and qualification of manufacturing processes, fixtures, tooling, and automation solutions in collaboration with manufacturing and design engineering teams.
- Support process characterization studies, Design of Experiments (DOE), process validation (IQ/OQ/PQ), and test method validation activities.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives focused on cost, quality, throughput, and lead-time reduction using Lean and Six Sigma methodologies.
- Conduct time studies, motion studies, value stream mapping, and other industrial engineering analyses to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Collect, analyze, and report manufacturing performance metrics such as yield, throughput, cycle time, and scrap to support operational decision making.
- Create and maintain manufacturing documentation including work instructions, process flow diagrams, standard work, process control plans, and engineering change documentation.
- Support root cause investigations and implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support product launches, process transfers, and manufacturing readiness activities.
- Assist with manufacturing data collection and reporting systems, including ERP, MES, and PLM platforms.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related technical field required.
- Master’s degree in Industrial or Manufacturing Engineering preferred.
Experience and Skills
Required
- 2-4 years of industrial, manufacturing, or operations engineering experience in a regulated or high-volume manufacturing environment.
- Knowledge of industrial engineering fundamentals including time studies, line balancing, capacity planning, labor analysis, and process flow optimization.
- Experience supporting manufacturing process development, validation activities, or continuous improvement projects.
- Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing principles, including 5S, visual management, standardized work, and waste reduction techniques.
- Basic understanding of statistical analysis methods including SPC, capability studies, and problem-solving methodologies.
- Experience creating or maintaining manufacturing documentation such as work instructions, standard operating procedures, and process flow documentation.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and bills of material.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills and ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and other data analysis tools.
- Familiarity with CAD software for layout development and manufacturing visualization is preferred.
Preferred
- Experience within a medical device, life sciences, electronics, or other regulated manufacturing environment.
- Familiarity with medical device quality systems and regulatory requirements including GMP and ISO 13485.
- Exposure to process validation activities (IQ/OQ/PQ), DOE, and risk assessment tools such as PFMEA.
- Knowledge of simulation tools such as FlexSim, Simio, Arena, or equivalent.
- Experience with ERP, MES, or PLM systems.
- Lean or Six Sigma certification (Yellow Belt or equivalent).
- Exposure to automation, robotics, or electro-mechanical assembly processes.
Other
- Ability to travel up to 10% to manufacturing and supplier sites.
- May be required to work in cleanroom or classified manufacturing environments and comply with applicable protocols.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is :
$75,000.00 - $120,750.00
Additional Description for Pay Transparency:
Subject to the terms of their respective plans, employees are eligible to participate in the Company’s consolidated retirement plan (pension) and savings plan (401(k)).
Subject to the terms of their respective policies and date of hire, employees are eligible for the following time off benefits:
Vacation –120 hours per calendar year
Sick time - 40 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Colorado –48 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Washington –56 hours per calendar year
Holiday pay, including Floating Holidays –13 days per calendar year
Work, Personal and Family Time - up to 40 hours per calendar year
Parental Leave – 480 hours within one year of the birth/adoption/foster care of a child
