Full Job Description
We have an opportunity for a motivated individual to fill the role of HVAC Field Quality Assurance Technician. In this position, the successful candidate will be responsible for commissioning, monitoring, auditing, and performing final closeout checks in the installation of our portfolio of energy efficiency solutions across North America within our customer base of Quick Serve Restaurant (QSR), Casual Dining chains, retail and enterprise sites, with a particular focus on HVAC solutions.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as Budderfly's on-site field representative and superintendent during HVAC installation projects, providing oversight of contractor execution, site safety, installation quality, and project closeout activities.
  • Lead the commissioning, verification, and final acceptance of HVAC replacement projects and associated Budderfly energy solutions, ensuring systems are installed, configured, and operating as designed.
  • Act as the primary field quality assurance resource, holding contractors accountable to Budderfly installation standards, safety requirements, and performance expectations.
  • Validate installation quality through field inspections, commissioning processes, testing procedures, and detailed closeout reviews to ensure operational readiness.
  • Support Budderfly's commitment to customer satisfaction by identifying installation deficiencies, escalating issues, and driving corrective actions through resolution.
  • Provide technical expertise and real-time support to installation contractors related to HVAC equipment, controls, energy management systems, and project-specific requirements.
  • Conduct comprehensive installation closeout reviews utilizing standardized quality assurance and commissioning checklists, verifying completion of all required project deliverables.
  • Review installer submitted documentation, photographs, startup forms, commissioning reports, and quality records to confirm compliance with Budderfly standards.
  • Utilize phone, video, and remote monitoring tools to assess installation quality, troubleshoot issues, and coordinate corrective actions with field personnel.
  • Monitor newly installed systems following project completion to verify operational performance, identify deficiencies, and ensure successful turnover to service and customer teams.
  • Perform technical reviews of Test & Balance (TAB) reports, commissioning reports, startup documentation, and performance data to develop contractor punch lists and customer-facing deficiency reports.
  • Maintain a consistent, repeatable, and scalable quality assurance process for the installation and verification of thousands of high-efficiency rooftop HVAC systems across Budderfly's national customer portfolio.
  • Support installations across multiple market segments, including quick-service restaurants (QSR), casual dining, retail, and enterprise customers.
  • Drive installation quality, customer satisfaction, and project profitability by ensuring work is completed correctly the first time and in accordance with Budderfly standards.
  • Collaborate closely with HVAC Installation, Energy Performance Engineering, Service & Maintenance, Customer Management, and General Solutions teams to resolve field issues and achieve company objectives.
  • Interface directly with customers, contractors, and internal stakeholders to communicate project status, address field concerns, and facilitate timely resolution of installation-related issues.
  • Identify recurring installation trends and quality concerns and provide feedback to operations teams to support continuous improvement initiatives and contractor performance enhancement.

Desired Skills & Experience
  • 7+ years of commercial HVAC experience with demonstrated expertise in installation, startup, commissioning, troubleshooting, and quality assurance.
  • Strong working knowledge of rooftop units (RTUs), make-up air systems, exhaust systems, packaged equipment, split systems, heat pumps, refrigeration systems, economizers, controls, and ventilation systems.
  • Experience serving as a Site Superintendent, Commissioning Agent, Lead Installer, TAB Technician, Service Technician, or similar field leadership role.
  • Proven experience overseeing third-party contractors and holding vendors accountable for safety, workmanship, schedule adherence, and installation quality.
  • Ability to identify installation deficiencies, code violations, commissioning issues, and performance concerns, and drive corrective actions to closure.
  • Proficiency in reviewing and interpreting Test & Balance (TAB) reports, commissioning reports, startup documentation, mechanical drawings, control sequences, and equipment submittals.
  • Strong understanding of airflow, ventilation, building pressure relationships, refrigeration circuits, economizer operation, and HVAC control strategies.
  • Experience troubleshooting operational, comfort, energy performance, and equipment reliability issues in occupied commercial facilities.
  • Working knowledge of EMS/BMS/DDC control systems, remote monitoring platforms, and network-connected HVAC equipment.
  • Experience utilizing diagnostic tools including refrigeration gauges, digital psychrometers, airflow measurement devices, electrical test equipment, and commissioning instruments.
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical findings to contractors, customers, project managers, engineers, and executive stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, site visits, commissioning activities, and punch list items simultaneously.
  • Self-motivated and capable of working independently with limited supervision while making sound field-based decisions.
  • Experience supporting national account customers within QSR, retail, restaurant, grocery, or multi-site commercial environments preferred.
  • Familiarity with applicable OSHA safety requirements, manufacturer installation standards, and commercial HVAC industry best practices.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, mobile field applications, remote collaboration tools, and photo/document management platforms.
  • Ability to travel extensively (75%+) throughout the United States, including overnight travel, flexible schedules, occasional weekends, and extended field assignments as required.
  • Work days and hours may fluctuate based on project needs; availability to work nights and weekends is required.

  • EPA Universal Certification

  • NATE Certification
  • NEBB, AABC, or TABB Certification
  • HVAC Commissioning Certification (BCCB, ACG, BCxA, or equivalent)
  • Manufacturer factory training and certifications (Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Daikin, Johnson Controls, etc.)
  • Valid Driver's License with acceptable driving record


Compensation

$85,000-$100,000 USD

Compensation is based on factors including level of experience, skillset, qualifications, and location.
