The Human Resources Manager role is an integral part of the HR generalist team, ensuring that all employees at KIPP DC are supported throughout their employee life cycle, including onboarding, compensation, compliance, coverage, offboarding, and other general support. The starting salary range for this role is $78,436-$85,256. This is a full-time role with hybrid flexibility based at HDQ with an anticipated start date of August 2026.
Location and Type of WorkThis is an exempt position and will report to the Director of Human Resources. As a headquarters team that is focused on being responsive to our schools and meeting the needs of our students and families, we approach our work in a way that reflects these priorities. This position will generally work independently and not regularly interface with students, families, or school teams. This position will primarily work from our headquarters office to maintain a connection to their colleagues and foster a sense of cross-functional collaboration. Because of the nature of this position's work, this role allows for hybrid flexibility and will be required to be onsite 2 days per week.
Responsibilities
The percentages for each key responsibility are estimates, and other duties may be assigned. Flexibility and responsiveness are encouraged to accommodate organizational needs.
Support the entire employee life cycle (30% of time)
- Manage employment offer letters and offer letter amendments
- Serves as an ambassador for KIPP DC's compensation strategy, including, but not limited to:
- Advising hiring managers and recruitment partners on salary ranges and scales
- Determining starting salary for offer letters
- Coordinating one time payments, stipends, or bonuses to applicable staff
- Communicating with employees and candidates about KIPP DC's compensation philosophy and specific offers
- Manage employee onboarding, including, but not limited to:
- Collection of pre-employment documentation
- Providing guidance and tracking completion of background checks
- Conducting weekly New Hire Orientation
- Ensuring technology is ready and other systems are in place for the employees first day
- Manage employee changes in Workday, KIPP DC's Human Resources Information System (HRIS)
- Manage employee inquiries from the HR help desk as needed, and/or ensure question is escalated to the appropriate team members
Ensure customer service and compliance with HR best practice (20% of time)
- Maintain systems, in particular Freshservice (HR's inquiry system and database) to provide outstanding customer service to all KIPP DC employees
- Ensure KIPP DC's HR policies and procedures comply with Federal and DC laws and encompass HR best practices; provide input to those policies to ensure they are properly documented, updated and communicated as necessary
- Adhere to ethical standards and professional conduct as a HR representative
- Maintains a secured system for confidential documentation and record storage
- Maintain systems, in particular Freshservice (HR's inquiry system and database) to provide outstanding customer service to all KIPP DC employees
- Ensure KIPP DC's HR policies and procedures comply with Federal and DC laws and encompass HR best practices; provide input to those policies to ensure they are properly documented, updated and communicated as necessary
- Adhere to ethical standards and professional conduct as a HR representative
- Maintains a secured system for confidential documentation and record storage
Manage strategic HR priorities (30% of time)
- Execute projects related to HR and Talent Team goals, such as participating in the returning offer letter process and mass new hire orientation, implementing new background check systems and policies, design and implement employee engagement projects and strategies, offboarding and exiting, and other HR priorities
- Support in executing an identified major HR priority for the entire organization, such as general coverage (substitutes, internal coverage) or compliance (I-9, SSOAA, etc)
- Support in the creation and execution of any applicable RFP and vendor management
- Support the success of the applicable identified major HR priority by ensuring any applicable stakeholder engagement, budget management, and/or project management
Support school leader retention and engagement (20% of time)
- Develop and maintains strong relationships with school leaders, recruitment and other cross functional teams
- Partner with recruitment to support recruiting retention conversations and the yearly returning offer letter process for school-based staff; partners and meets with school leaders on retention, non-retention, coverage strategies, and any general employee concerns in preparation for staff planning purposes
- Hold office hours at schools to ensure employees have access to direct HR support
Requirements & Preferences
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Management or related field; or equivalent years of experience required
- Minimum of three years of professional experience required, with at least 1-2 years in Human Resources
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in education
- PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP certification
- Experience with customer ticket management systems like Zendesk or Freshservice
- Experience with Workday highly preferred
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand frequently
- Ability to travel across KIPP DC schools
- Prolonged periods of sedentary work
