Full Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Transportation/Roadway Engineer to join our Lansing team and support MDOT roadway and bridge projects across Michigan. The job is in office, mandatory 2 days per week and remote work eligible 3 days per week. This is a hands-on technical role for engineers who enjoy producing high-quality designs, solving complex roadway and drainage challenges, and mentoring junior staff-while contributing to impactful transportation infrastructure. Key Responsibilities-Roadway & Civil Design Develop design criteria, geometric layouts, alignments, superelevation, and detailed roadway calculations. Produce construction plans and proposal packages in accordance with MDOT's Plan Development Guide and Design Wiki. Apply advanced 3D modeling techniques to deliver accurate, high-quality roadway designs. Software & Technical Expertise Perform production-level design using Bentley MicroStation and MDOT OpenRoads Designer (ORD) Connect Edition. Prepare special provisions, cost estimates, and technical documentation. Conduct fieldwork to evaluate existing conditions and support design decisions. Drainage, Hydraulics & Structures Support Complete drainage studies, storm sewer design, stormwater management, and BMP implementation. Perform hydraulic analysis and modeling for bridges and culverts, including scour evaluations. Work Zone & Traffic Control Develop Transportation Management Plans (TMPs) in accordance with MDOT's Work Zone Safety and Mobility Manual. Design traffic control plans that promote safe, efficient construction and mobility. Quality, Collaboration & Leadership Ensure work meets high standards through adherence to corporate QA/QC procedures. Support proposal development and contribute technical input for RFP responses. Participate in industry events and assist with business development efforts. Mentor and supervise junior engineers, providing technical guidance and professional development.
Skills & Abilities
Expert Knowledge of computer assisted design and drafting (CADD) 3D and 4D software and practices. Expert Knowledge of engineer principles of design. Expert Knowledge of Microsoft business software (excel, word, etc.). Excellent verbal and written communications skills. Expert knowledge of federal, state and local regulations. Basic knowledge of design standards (AASHTO, NACTO, etc.).
Qualifications
*Bachelor's degree in Civil, Transportation, or Structural Engineering or related discipline. *Professional engineering (PE) license. *7 years of related experience. *Domestic and/or international travel may be required. The frequency of travel is contingent on specific duties, responsibilities, and the essential functions of the position, which may vary depending on workload and project demands. *Equivalent additional directly related experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
Preferred Qualifications
*MicroStation & OpenRoads: Production-level proficiency with Bentley MicroStation and MDOT OpenRoads Designer (ORD) Connect Edition.*Work Zone Safety: Strong understanding of Transportation Management Plans (TMPs) per MDOT's Workzone Safety and Mobility Manual.*Hydraulics & Scour Analysis: Experience in hydraulic analysis and modeling for bridges and culverts, including scour evaluation.*Drainage Design: Skilled in drainage studies, storm sewer design, stormwater management, and Best Management Practices (BMPs).#LI-HYBRID#LI-MS1

Additional Pay Range Information
CDM Smith is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. This pay range is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels for the geographic location assigned to the position. In addition to geographic location, a candidate's salary is determined by several other factors including, but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, relevant work experience, skills, required certifications, and education/training.
Additional Compensation
All bonuses at CDM Smith are discretionary and may or may not apply to this position.
