Job Description

The Intermediate Highway Design Engineer - OpenRoads role is based in Markham, Ontario, Canada and supports the delivery of transportation infrastructure projects within a multidisciplinary engineering team. The position contributes to provincial and municipal roadway design, including highways, interchanges, and urban roadways, under the guidance of senior engineering leadership.

The role encompasses geometric design development, preparation of technical documentation, and coordination with disciplines such as structures, traffic engineering, utilities, and environmental services. Work involves adherence to Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) standards, Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) guidelines, and municipal regulations across project lifecycle phases from preliminary design through detailed design and construction support.

The ideal candidate brings 3-5 years of highway design experience with exposure to Ontario-based infrastructure projects and strong proficiency in roadway design modeling platforms.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop geometric design solutions for highways, interchanges, arterial roads, and collector road systems in accordance with design standards
  • Prepare alignments, profiles, cross-sections, and grading layouts, ensuring integration with drainage design coordination
  • Produce and review engineering drawings, technical reports, and quantity take-offs for transportation infrastructure projects
  • Support preparation of contract documents, specifications, and cost estimates aligned with project scope and procurement requirements
  • Ensure compliance with MTO standards, TAC guidelines, and municipal engineering requirements through design review processes
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams including structural, traffic, utility, and environmental disciplines to resolve design interfaces
  • Participate in design reviews, client coordination meetings, and technical discussions to support project delivery
  • Provide construction support services including responding to RFIs and reviewing field conditions against design intent


Qualifications

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering
  • 3-5 years of experience in highway design, including exposure to Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) projects
  • Proficiency in Bentley InRoads / OpenRoads Designer, AutoCAD, and AutoCAD Civil 3D
  • Strong knowledge of MTO standards, TAC guidelines, and municipal roadway design criteria
  • Experience with geometric design elements including alignments, profiles, grading, and cross-sections
  • Understanding of traffic engineering principles and roadway safety design considerations
  • Familiarity with environmental assessment processes related to transportation infrastructure
  • Strong analytical, technical problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage schedules and meet project deadlines in a multidisciplinary team environment

Assets
  • Experience supporting construction-phase services for roadway projects
  • Exposure to cost estimating methodologies and quantity take-offs for infrastructure contracts
  • Familiarity with utility coordination and right-of-way constraints
  • Knowledge of drainage design integration within roadway projects
  • Progress toward Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Ontario
