Job Description

The Heersink School of Medicine (HSOM) is seeking applications for the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Professional Development. Reporting directly to the Senior Vice President for Medicine and Dean, this role serves as a key member of the HSOM senior leadership team, providing strategic leadership and oversight for academic affairs and professional development initiatives across the School. The successful candidate will be a collaborative and influential leader who serves as a liaison between the HSOM and partners across UAB and UAB Medicine, advancing the HSOMs mission and fostering an environment of excellence and engagement.
  • Provide strategic leadership and guidance for the academic affairs and professional development efforts across the Heersink School of Medicine. This includes supervision and oversight of the Offices of Faculty Affairs, Leadership Development, Wellness, and Access and Engagement. This position will work with these offices and existing leadership on critical functions within the HSOM, including but not limited to:
    • Faculty Council appointment promotion and tenure process
    • Faculty and staff recognition programs, both internal and external, including HSOM Prestigious Awards Program
    • Onboarding and support activities across the faculty-life cycle for all faculty
    • Design and delivery of leadership programming and professional development for leaders, faculty and staff
    • Faculty and staff well-being strategy, including burnout prevention, resilience resources and programs that support a healthy work environment
    • Advancement of a culture of access, engagement and belonging
  • Partner with lead HR and legal stakeholders across entities (HSOM, UAB, UAB Health System and other HSOM offices) on policies, procedures and actions related to academic and faculty affairs and professional development.
  • Serve as a partner and key liaison for the HSOM with the Provost's Office on matters including but not limited to areas of faculty and academic affairs.
  • Serve as a partner and liaison for the HSOM with UAB Medicine and Birmingham VA Health Care services.
  • Provide advisory leadership and guidance to HSOM Dean's Office across faculty recruitment, leadership succession, departmental reviews, and organizational development, while partnering cross-functionally to align operational and financial priorities.
  • Partner with department chairs, division chiefs and other senior leaders across UAB Medicine to assist with the recruitment and retention of key HSOM faculty and leadership.
  • Serve on several committees, including but not limited to the HSOM Dean's Council, HSOM Dean's Leadership Team, and HSOM Executive Committee.
  • Serve as the Senior Vice President and Dean's designee where requested and appropriate.

2. The successful candidate must qualify for an appointment as an associate or full professor in the Heersink School of Medicine (tenured)

3. Accomplished academic medical/scientific leader, with experience supporting faculty success and strengthening institutional culture

4. Experience collaborating effectively across units, institution, and stakeholder groups

5. Demonstrated ability to mentor and develop faculty and leaders at all career stages
