Full Job Description
Position Scope

The Heavy Equipment Training Instructor is accountable for designing, developing, implementing, and supporting a comprehensive heavy equipment operator training program in alignment with compnay standards, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices. This role leads the development of structured, competency-based curricula for students and operators, covering classroom learning, simulator training, and hands-on field experience. This will be a Monday to Friday role with 11 hour days.

Responsibilities

Training Program and Curriculum Development
  • Following the company framework and outline, design and develop a comprehensive training curriculum for students to safely and competently operate heavy equipment, including:
    -Articulating trucks
    -Small excavators
    -Small to medium-sized dozers
    -Wheel loaders
  • Develop structured learning pathways that incorporate:
    -Foundational theory and safety awareness
    -Progressive skills development
    -Competency-based milestones and checkpoints
    -Entry-level and job-ready outcomes
  • Ensure curricula align with operational requirements, regulatory obligations, and equipment manufacturer guidelines


Training Materials and Learning Methods Development
  • Develop complete training materials, including but not limited to:
    -Instructor-led classroom presentations and lesson plans
    -Simulator-based training exercises and scenarios
    -Practical field-based exercises and demonstrations
    -Student evaluations, assessments, and competency checkpoints
  • Design practical assessments that validate operator skill, judgment, and hazard awareness.
  • Ensure training materials are clear, consistent, and defensible for audit and compliance purposes.
  • Develop, adapt, or standardize existing Safe Operating Procedures (SOPs) for heavy equipment operation. Ensure SOPs reflect:
    -Site-specific hazards and controls
    -Equipment limitations and manufacturer recommendations
    -Company and regulatory requirements
  • Design and develop a comprehensive Heavy Equipment Safety Orientation for students and trainees, including:
    -Hazard identification and risk management
    -PPE requirements
    -Safe work practices
    -Emergency response procedures
    -Incident reporting expectations


Program Coordination & Intake Scheduling
  • Work collaboratively with KKETS to develop and maintain a structured student intake schedule.-Align intake planning with instructor availability, equipment resources, simulator access, and field capacity.-Support program readiness and smooth transitions between intakes.


Program Implementation & Support
  • Provide guidance, tools, and support during the implementation and rollout of the training program
    Support instructors and facilitators with: -Curriculum interpretation
    -Assessment standards
    -Evaluation consistency


Qualifications

  • Ten (10) years of hands-on heavy equipment operating experience.
  • Five (5) years in training delivery, mentoring, curriculum development, or program design.
  • Five (5) years of leadership (supervisor or management) experience.
  • Two (2) years of experience using learning or training management systems (LMS).
  • Experience developing competency-based or student-focused training programs.
  • Familiarity with simulators and blended learning models is an asset.
  • Journeyperson Heavy Equipment Operator or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Adult Education, Training, or Instructional Design certification is an asset.
  • Post secondary education is considered an asset.
  • Advanced technical knowledge of heavy equipment operations and associated hazards across multiple environments, including maintenance fundamentals (servicing, tire work, steaming, etc.).
  • Ability to design structured curricula and learning pathways
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience working with external partners and training organizations
  • Excellent organizational, documentation, and planning skills
  • Ability to work effectively in classroom, simulator, and field environments
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and learning management systems.
  • Ability to research, interpret, and apply new information and best practices.
  • Experience working with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities, and knowledge of their diverse cultures, perspectives, and workforce development needs, are considered assets.
  • Understanding of adult learning principles and instructional techniques.
