Full Job Description
The Health, Safety and Sustainability Manager provides support and guidance to operations across the Business Unit through the development, and implementation of safety and health programs that support the enterprise strategic safety and health plan ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations.

Essential Duties:
  • Lead the development and implementation of HS&S Standards and communicate Best Practice Procedures throughout the business unit.
  • Communicates, implements, and monitors environmental, safety, accident prevention programs and procedures in accordance with government regulations and Ports America policy including HS&S auditing (i.e. Road Maps and B2B audits), Risk Assessments, education and training, and incident investigation.
  • Ensure the development of direct reports by setting clear goals and objectives and providing consistent and concise communication.
  • Conducts training and development for managers to learn regular inspections monitoring area safety and environmental practices. Reports violations to appropriate management staff when required.
  • Monitor the implementation of corrective and preventative actions related to incident investigation and management, audit findings and recommendations, and other local, regional, or company initiatives, providing guidance as required, and helping operating locations meet goals and targets.
  • Reporting and tracking of all safety KPI and metrics and communicating same to all levels as appropriate.
  • Assist sites in compliance with regulatory and company reporting requirements, including ongoing measurement and assessment as appropriate.
  • Represents the company with local government organizations related to health and safety to ensure a mutual understanding of the Company's goals and requirements, and to work in a co-operative partnership with local resources. IE - Port Authority, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Customs, Waterfront Commission, Police and Fire Departments, OSHA.
  • Work with key stakeholders to deliver tangible improvements in HS&S performance including local HS&S resources, local consultative committees, Operations, Equipment/Engineering, Claims, Training and Human Resources.
  • Travel 25% within assigned region

Physical Working Attributes:
  • Working in an office environment and on shipping terminals
  • Access ships, cranes, terminal yard, and office space.
  • The environment may be hazardous to persons unable to see or hear fast moving, heavy equipment.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelors Degree in Environmental Health and Safety, Maritime Operations, Logistics, Supply Chain or related discipline
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • CPR and First Aid Certified.
  • 5+ years of experience working within a maritime, terminal operations, supply chain, or other safety critical industry.
  • 5+ years of leadership experience

Preferred Qualifications:
  • ASP or CSP Certification
  • Comprehensive knowledge of federal and state OSHA, U.S. Coast Guard and other applicable codes and regulations.
  • Knowledge of terminal, stevedore and vessel operations and equipment, physical and operations security.
  • Knowledge of union contracts.
  • Knowledge of safety management practices and procedures, including accident investigation and reporting, hazardous materials standards, chemical protective standards, blood borne pathogens standard, ergonomic hazards, and the like.
  • Knowledge of fire prevention standards, oil spill containment procedures, emergency response methods, respiratory protection, and personal protective equipment requirements.
  • Previous audit experience
