Your responsibilities

Position Overview:

The Head of Health & Safety is responsible for championing the thyssenkrupp Polysius North America, Inc.'s health and safety initiatives. This individual is responsible for directing and implementing health and safety policies, procedures, and programs for our employees in every field of our activity, from engineering to field service installations. This position requires an individual who will proactively seek new approaches and innovations to root safety in every decision, design and execution made by our employees.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Thorough knowledge of OSH responsibilities pertaining to Offices, Inspections, Industrial Construction, Start up and Manufacturing processes for all Projects.
  • Ability to adapt thyssenkrupp Polysius North America, Inc. worldwide and regional OSH policies and procedures.
  • Oversees OSH compliance for all business of thyssenkrupp Polysius North America, Inc.
    • Develop Site Specific Occupational Health and Safety programs based on the thyssenkrupp Polysius North America, Inc. OSH Program Manual, client requirements, and functional operational needs.
    • Monitor and advise on technical and regulatory program requirements for occupational health and safety as needed to comply with OSHA, MSHA, and various other regulatory agencies.
    • Participate in regulatory inspections.
    • Communicate regulatory changes as required to all affected in the organization.
    • Coordinate appropriate responses to regulatory agencies.
    • Maintain all required Health and Safety files.
    • Perform and/or coordinate industrial hygiene programs and review results to ensure compliance with regulations.
    • Ensure that all work sites are current with the compliance of all site OSH requirements.
  • Lead the recruitment and hiring of site OSH personnel, responsible for all OSH field personnel.
  • Function as the main focal point for all OSH related issues during the development of projects.
  • Track and report all service/construction site OSH related efforts.
    • Review and align Client and Subcontractor safety programs for compliance and consistency.
    • Provide policies and procedure documentation for new projects as well as a general walkthrough of the jobsite areas.
    • Conduct on-site safety audits and correct unsafe work practices, behaviors, and conditions.
    • Interface with customer safety personnel regarding working conditions and address safety concerns with worksite supervisor.
    • Conduct formal incident investigations following all incidents to develop corrective actions and see through their execution. Provide incident related information to all affected parties onsite and within the thyssenkrupp Polysius North America, Inc. organization.
    • Manage required safety specific documentation before, during, and after a field service job and construction projects. Examples: required company safety training (orientations); MSHA required training; OSHA required training; Operator training/certifications; vehicle/equipment inspections.
  • Reinforce safety policies and procedures while providing feedback to encourage safety compliance.
    • Create structured employee safety practices regarding the use of Job Safety Analysis (JSA), Job Hazard Assessments or other Standard Operating Procedures.
    • Work with each supervisor/crew to assess task hazards prior to commencement of work.
    • Monitor and analyze incident reports to develop appropriate action plans to ensure effective correction of safety issues.
    • Assist department managers, supervisors, and employees with creative approaches to implement safety initiatives.


Your profile

  • Work with Human Resources on OSH related topics.
    • Assist department supervisors to address workers compensation claims, Return-toWork, Restricted Duty programs, and substance abuse programs.
    • Assist the recording of Employee training history for improved utilization to include Medical Monitoring program.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the PPE requirements for field service operations and projects. Make recommendations to improve comfort, compliance, and effectiveness of PPE.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to safety.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position will have direct supervisory responsibilities. Required Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree in occupational health and safety, or technical discipline; and 5 years related experience and training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Knowledge & Skills:
  • Must have at least 5 years of experience in an industrial evironment.
  • Must have at least 3 years of experience in a lead OSH role in a cement plant and/or a construction site.
  • Must have extensive knowledge of OSHA standards in construction and general industries.
  • Must have extensive knowledge of MSHA standards.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Understanding of and extensive field experience with workplace hazards, and the practical application of rules, procedures, and workplace monitoring.
  • Excellent leadership skills with the ability to influence, coach, and facilitate health and safety programs and policies.
  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent problem solver with the ability to identify alternative and practical solutions.
  • Strong team player, self-motivated, proactive thinker, flexible and adaptable.
  • Strong presentation and communication skills.
  • Strong statistical analysis.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills are required. Must have effective coping skills to work in an environment which includes the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks while meeting customer commitments and internal objectives. Ability to respond quickly, decisively, and appropriately to problems is very important.

Travel Demands:
  • The position reports to the Milwaukee, WI office with a preference for being located in Southeastern Wisconsin. Qualified remote candidates will be considered.
  • Travel is required up to 50% of the time.
