Job Description:

This role oversees a cross-functional team that is responsible for setting accounting policies under U.S. GAAP and producing financial reports for numerous legal entities and segment reporting purposes. This role will also monitor the Bank's compliance with the asset cap provision. Collaborates across Risk, TBSM, Corp Dev, Business leaders, Chief Accountants, and other critical areas to ensure accurate and complete financial reporting, including reporting on the Bank's asset position and proactively recommending adjustments to executions strategies to ensure the Bank remains compliant with the asset cap provision. Liaises with the regulatory affairs team to provide updates to the regulators. This role is also responsible for Accounting Policy & Advisory supporting U.S. businesses providing accounting advisory services to assist with the application of accounting policies as well as proactive Advisory on new and/or complex transactions including Corporate Development transactions.

Depth & Scope:
  • Provides people management leadership by hiring the best talent, setting goals, developing staff, managing employee performance and compensation decisions, promoting teamwork and handling any/all disciplinary actions, as required
  • Implements and manages processes, facilitates efficient data collection for financial reporting purposes, including reporting on asset positions
  • Maintains accurate and up-to-date records of data/information used in reporting
  • Identifies and implements opportunities for process improvements in financial reporting to reduce risk and create efficiencies
  • Reports on asset positions, profitability, RWA and capital to various Management and Board committees
  • Collaborates across Enterprise and U.S. Treasury, Corp Dev, U.S. Region Wholesale, business leaders and other critical areas to ensure accurate and complete financial reporting, including on the Combined Banks asset position
  • Identifies and assesses potential risks associated with asset optimization actions
  • Manages and oversees various governance practices including effective challenge, execution and documentation around the asset cap
  • Convenes governance (sub) committees as necessary to resolve escalated issues that require team owner input or executive action
  • Develops and implements training program for staff involved in financial reporting, including reporting on the asset cap provision, Lines of Business and Board
  • Manages Governance processes and review adherence to asset cap provision, including challenge process
  • Builds and sustains effective relationships with U.S. regulators
  • Works closely with Risk & Control partners to ensure compliance with internal and regulatory expectations
  • Provides accounting advisory services to assist various segments with the application of accounting policies as well as proactive advisory on new and/or complex transactions including Corporate Development transactions
  • Responsible for the legal entity financial statements produced in the U.S. Region under U.S. GAAP and the segment financial results prepared under IFRS. Reviews financial statement disclosures for appropriateness and reasonability for inclusion in the Consolidated Bank Financial Statements for the U.S. Bank
  • Leads technical aspects as well as certain project aspects of the Implementation of new accounting/disclosure requirements
  • Maintains effective and positive external relationships with the Bank's regulators, Auditors, Audit Committee, CBA, OSFI and various standard setters
  • Demonstrates client service excellence to internal Bank stakeholder groups - Segment CFO's, COO team, TBSM, Corp Dev, Risk, Legal, and U.S. Finance
  • Valuation related services on various Corp Dev transactions and other Bank Segment transactions
  • Drives efficiencies and communicates effectively across various work streams
  • Develops, assigns and monitors plans to ensure completion of goals and objectives


Education & Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • 15+ years of financial services experience required, preferably across multiple disciplines inclusive of deep subject matter expertise in Finance
  • Strong knowledge of accounting policies and practices for financial services under U.S. GAAP and/or IFRS, with demonstrated ability to apply guidance to complex situations
  • Ability to effectively manage financial reporting processes and drive process improvements to reduce risk and create efficiencies
  • Ability to apply consultative relationship management and influencing skills across all levels with organizational prowess
  • Ability to work effectively with a broad range of stakeholders
  • Experience in the effective execution of change management strategies and processes in a complex, multi-faceted business
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and determine what is important and where value can be best added
  • Organizational awareness and resourcefulness - understanding of whom to engage in order to identify solutions and resolve issues. Superior understanding and judgment on issues to resolve independently or to escalate
