Full Job Description
Head of MSLs, Oncology, Precision Medicine (PM), MA-US

Purpose:
  • Responsible for the strategic leadership and management of regional MSL team leaders within a specific therapeutic area and overall Astellas business objectives.
  • Responsible for representing field medical in Local Brand Team (LBT) and provide strategic and operational guidance as well as medical insights coming from the field.
  • Provide strategic and scientific input into strategic brand plan development and build functional therapeutic level objectives for MSL execution, e.g. Key Performance Indicators, in the field that support the brand plan.
  • Responsible for rightsizing and strategic deployment of MSL teams through the product life cycle management in alignment with product prioritization.
  • The role will report to the Head of Field Medical for performance management system ownership, above-brand field medical capability enhancement, Regional MSL team lead coaching and development; and have a dotted reporting line into the Local Brand Teams Medical Head for brand/business direction, performance coaching, guidance, and alignment of field medical activities to the applicable brand plans.


Essential Job Responsibilities:
  • Own national field medical strategy and performance: Accountable for national MSL team priorities, execution standards, budget management, and resource allocation
  • Implementation of enterprise field medical operating model: Responsible for deployment, targeting, field productivity expectations, field medical meeting objectives and cadence, and operational efficiencies.
  • Drive insights into action: Identify field medical engagement opportunities, recommend where to invest or shit focus, and translate KEE insights into business opportunities
  • Represent field medical in senior leadership forums: Partner with Medical, Sales, Marketing, Market Access, Field Medical Excellence, Compliance, and LBT to shape brand strategy and align execution.
  • Build leadership capability and culture: Coach and develop regional MSL team leaders, strength leadership and succession bench, reinforce accountability, and build a high-performing field medical culture.


Field Medical Leadership
  • Ensure effective MSL execution: Provides strategic leadership and direction across all functions of the MSL team to ensure all field medical deliverables are based on scientific validity, clinical importance, fiscal feasibility and aligned to both the brand plan and local business needs.
  • Serves as a recognized field medical authority by maintaining and communicating up-to-date knowledge of industry standards and practices, keeps abreast and proactively responds to market trends and/or shifts in the external medical affairs environment to predict and maximize positive impact to Astellas.
    • Agility to recognize and adapt to traditional and emerging external medical stakeholders, i.e. payers, patient advocacy groups etc., throughout the life cycle of the product.
    • Ensure filed medical team is equipped to build and maintain strong external stakeholder engagement activities.
    • Provide insights back into the organization
  • Establish field medical value measures and quality controls: Provide meaningful field medical value metrics, quality assurance controls, and operational assessment/analysis plans relevant to MA activities and deliverables.
  • Align field medical activities with the brand plan: Build a strong working relationship/partnership with the medical brand head to ensure alignment of field medical activities to the brand plan.
  • Enhance field medical processes and frameworks: Proactively identifies and develops necessary processes and continuous framework enhancements to ensure consistent delivery of strategic scientific/medical leadership


Scientific and Interaction Expertise
  • Knowledgeable on Astellas' therapeutic areas, key compounds, disease states, and associated studies and publications.
  • Knowledgeable on competitor landscape for Astellas' key compounds.
  • Proficient in scientific exchange to foster KEE relationships, to understand stakeholder needs in order to deliver brand plan, and to develop actionable medical insights.
  • Represent Voice of the Medical Community, based on the field interactions, to MA and cross divisional peers, as applicable.


People Leadership
  • Contribute to annual brand planning: Participate in development of annual brand plan with the regional brand team
  • Translate brand plans into field medical execution: Communicate the brand plan, identify field medical strategies and drive implementation by field medical teams.
  • Align and motivate MSL teams: Inspires the MSL teams, gains commitment to the Global field medical narrative and motivates them to consistently deliver a standard of excellence and superior results.
  • Strengthen people-management capability: Mentors people managers on attracting, hiring, developing and retaining a high-performing MSL team
  • Supports growth and development experiences that prepares the department for broader responsibilities and creates initiatives to ensure the retention of strong performers.
  • Reinforce performance and engagement: Provides timely feedback to ensure a productive, professional and motivated team and a highly valued work environment.
  • Advance Medical Affairs excellence: Foster a culture of innovation, teamwork and accountability with the Medical Affairs department to ensure commitment to MA excellence to attract high performing talents.


Qualifications Required:
  • MD, PhD, PharmD, OD, DO, DNP in health relates sciences.
  • Years of Experience: Minimum of 10 years in scientific/medical experience in research-based pharmaceutical industry with minimum 5 years of experience working in a leadership capacity.

Salary Range: $189,259-$270,370 (Final compensation will be determined based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to skills, experience, and organizational equity considerations).
