Who are we hiring?KC Current is seeking a highly experienced, collaborative, and player-centered Head of Medical to lead all sports medicine and rehabilitation operations for the club. This individual will help develop, coordinate, and administer a comprehensive medical, sports therapy, injury risk reduction, and rehabilitation program for KC Current, and will oversee the day-to-day operations of the athletic training room and the First Team medical staff.
The Head of Medical will lead a multidisciplinary medical team and work closely with team physicians, athletic trainers, physical therapists, sports science staff, performance coaches, coaches, and soccer leadership. This role will liaise closely with the Head of Performance to ensure an integrated approach to player health, availability, and long-term athlete well-being, while upholding the highest standards of medical care.
What will you do?
Sports Medicine Leadership & Player Care- Lead and administer all sports medicine operations for the First Team, including training coverage, matchday medical services, recovery protocols, and daily treatment coordination.
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the athletic training room and manage the First Team medical staff.
- Direct the assessment, treatment, and ongoing management of player injuries and illnesses, including all orthopedic treatment, therapy, and rehabilitation activities.
- Coordinate care with team physicians and manage external providers, including physical therapists, chiropractors, and specialists.
- Develop and maintain evidence-based medical protocols, policies, and standards of care.
- Ensure all medical decisions prioritize player health, safety, and well-being.
Return to Performance & Injury Risk Reduction- Ensure daily therapies and rehabilitation services have clear progression criteria from injury through return to full training and competition.
- Collaborate with the Head of Performance and Rehabilitation team to align rehabilitation progressions, workload management, GPS/load monitoring data, and return-to-training decisions.
- Participate in training and match environments to support medical decision-making
- Help develop and oversee injury risk reduction strategies, including standardized club screening protocols, biomechanical assessments, and preseason/postseason medical evaluations.
- Help lead interdisciplinary strategies to establish consistent and reliable player health monitoring programs and track availability trends to reduce injury risk and recurrence.
- Apply current research on the female athlete to injury risk reduction, screening, injury management, and long-term health strategies.
Integrated Collaboration- Provide daily injury status, availability updates, and medical insights to soccer leadership, the Head of Performance, and the technical staff.
- Lead interdisciplinary meetings to review injury status, coordinate care plans, and align recovery timelines and player availability projections.
- Work closely with coaching, performance, nutrition, sports science, and player care staff.
- Support individualized player care plans and provide medical input into performance planning and recovery practices.
Medical Governance & Compliance- Ensure compliance with NWSL, FIFA, U.S. Soccer, OSHA, emergency action, and other applicable medical standards.
- Maintain accurate medical documentation and reporting in the club's electronic medical record and athlete management system.
- Coordinate required league medical reporting and communication processes.
- Support roster decisions and player acquisitions through medical evaluations, risk assessments, provider network coordination, and specialist referrals.
- Manage relationships with healthcare providers, hospitals, diagnostic imaging partners, and specialists.
- Maintain confidentiality and appropriate handling of all medical information.
Leadership & Staff Development- Recruit, lead, supervise, and mentor medical staff across the First Team and KC Current II.
- Establish departmental goals, operational standards, and performance expectations.
- Foster a collaborative, high-performing, and player-focused culture.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to soccer leadership on matters related to player health and availability.
- Other duties as assigned.
What do you need to succeed?
Required- Master's or doctoral degree in Athletic Training, Physical Therapy, or a related healthcare field.
- Board of Certification (BOC) Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) and/or licensed Physical Therapist.
- Kansas State Athletic Training (or Physical Therapy) licensure is required before the start date.
- Current CPR/AED certification.
- Minimum 10 years of sports medicine experience, including at least 5 years in professional soccer.
- Minimum 3-5 years of leadership experience as a Head Athletic Trainer, Head of Medical, or director-level role managing medical staff or multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
- Demonstrated experience with injury diagnosis, rehabilitation, and return-to-play management.
- Proficiency with electronic medical records (EMR) and athlete management systems.
- Exceptional communication, leadership, organizational, and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-performance team environment.
- Professional discretion and ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to travel both domestically and internationally.
Preferred- Experience working with female athletes, particularly in women's professional soccer.
- Doctorate in Physical Therapy, Athletic Training, or a related field.
- Experience in the NWSL, MLS, WSL, national team federations, or other elite high-performance environments.
- Experience implementing return-to-play and load monitoring frameworks.
- Familiarity with athlete monitoring systems, medical record platforms, and performance technologies.
- Experience supporting international athletes and multidisciplinary performance teams.
- Fluency in Spanish.
Special requirements of the Job: - Must be able to work a flexible schedule, inclusive of weekends, nights, holidays, and matchdays.
- Ability to travel with the team domestically and internationally, including overnight road trips.
- Ability to monitor company communications and respond to time-sensitive medical matters with players, staff, and senior leadership.
- Must be able to stand, walk, and move around training and match environments for extended periods of time.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds as needed for medical kits, equipment, and on-field emergency response.
- Requires frequent bending, kneeling, squatting, and reaching to deliver treatment and on-field care.
- Ability to work outdoors continuously for extended periods of time in all weather conditions.
